every super bowl weekend the sportsman club at mcavoys throws the super bowl sturgeon derby , people come from all the place to fish this thing , the party goes on from 7am on the saturday till super bowl sunday and stops @ noon just in time for everyone to make it to there partys, tops prizes go into the 10 thousands, its something us locals never miss.

my party started on friday night , after loading the boat up in the evening i drove to the pittsburg marina to shoot the shit and talk sturgeon with the "lucky strike" crew, they had BBQ going on , ciapinno & all kinds of liquor & beer, after getin my buzz on i headed home to get some rest for the derby , woke up at 5am , showerd , drank some gatorade for the hang over then drove to 711 to load up on ice and beer(already had bait reserved,2 #s of grass shrimp , 2 dozen ghosts , lamprey eels & pile snakes) then headed to the marina to meet a freind from work and her husband, loaded up then set off to get our spot around port chicago navy base for the outgo.
 THE FISHING:

fishing was slow at our first stop, we sat through almost the entire tide for squat , heard about fish being caught at the ships but didnt want hop on that band wagon , figured during the flood the fish would come our way if we made a move towards honker bay in shallw, turned out to be an ok idea except that some idiot felt that we anchored to close to him and started talking shit on the radio , after a few insults back and some strong words insuring him that we wernt gonna move he ended moving quietly(typicle derby stuff), i really felt that we didnt cork him and if anything we felt that we put him on top of our line. he left and we prepared for the incoming flood , once it started movin and with fish on the sonar we thought it was time , well time for shakers , we started nailing them little suckers at random but where theres smal ones theres big ones we figured so we kept on fishing, turned out that the biggins ddint wanna eat our baits , ended up killing a couple bottles of canadian mist along with beer , dana my co worker cooked up a great steak dinner so that was a plus and then talked shit with my buddies on the radio , HA the radio chit chat is not for kids so if you fish this derby leave the little ones with the babysitter or keep your radio off , stuff will leave um scarred for life!

tides were weak at night so we slept most of the time because the wind made it really unfishable , in the morning i woke up to all the lines tangled with each other so had to cut a bunch of stuff and re rig for the morning tide , ended up fishing till 11am for a handfull of shaker sturgeon then called it a day.....a few of my mossdale club members ended up getting 2nd place on the first day and third the second , they really were on the fish, probly won a couple thousand dollars, ill post pictures of there fish when they post um up.

anyways a fun time , heres a few pics i took before my cam died

Dude, is that your boat? If it is, you could have four guys fishing at the same time
with no problem. Thanks for the report and pictures Andy. See u in the next sturgeon hookup.

yea i guess benicia and MBF were the hot areas , good job getting 2 legals

it got really windy at night , i got smashed then passed out , woke up on the deck  next to a broken lantern , beer bottles and grass shrimp all around me , instead of reeling in all the lines i just snuggled into my sleeping bag and passed out ,boat was rocking every whch way!
