Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum and just made a purchase last week at the Sportman's show in Sacramento Cal Expo. I've tried kayak fishing a couple times with my nephew and fell in love with it and just made a leap of faith into it. I would like to know how to go about rigging this for fishing. So far I've got the standard with the 4 flush mount rod holder, Hobie Live Well, and the Sand wheels but would like to have it rigged like most guys here. I would use this in the Monterey Bay and some of the Bay Area lakes so any help would be appreciated. Let me know where to purchase, how to install, etc etc. I'm just a beginner and willing to listen to all advices. Thank you!!

Hi maddiesdadie:

I would start slow with rigging and fish first.
After a few trips, I'm sure you'll come up with lots of Ideas.
Are you going to fish Salt and/ or fresh Water?
                                                              Sea-ya
                                                              Ernie

P.S. Watch out for thru the Scupper
Hole Carts! The side walls in the Scupper
don't hold up!

Thanks Guys for the quick replies. I tried looking for the discount code but couldn't find it so I got the 10% discount for Mel Cotton's instead. I will take the advice of going out and try to fish a couple of time first in the lakes before I go to salt.
I live in Monterey so I will be doing quite a bit of the kelp beds here for rock fish when the season opens again. Have anyone tried Calero lakes yet? Is it friendly for a beginner like me?

calero is very noob friendly, although they have a few basscar types there. just be sure your boat is dry inside and out as they do quagga inspections there.  be safe.

here's the code for hook 1

We give 10% off for all Nor Cal members and I've had a few questions about the code to use.  You can ALWAYS use KFNC.  This code is always valid.  With your order, you will get another 10% code, so you can use that one instead if you'd like to on the next order, but it has an expiration date.

Thank you for all of the orders!  If you ever have any questions about products, rigging, etc..  please let me know!

welcome to the madness, MD! It only gets worse (better) from here.

Most of my experience is from saltwater surf launches.
I like things simple, less to go wrong & less stuff to lose/break/hassle with-especially in the beginning.
Hobies can be problematic in the surf for some so I highly recommend some trial runs without any gear aboard. Just find a spot to launch & land a few times & get to know your boat. Kelp also can be a hassle with the fins deployed.

a rod or two & mimimal tackle, some fish landing equipment, safety gear/proper clothing, and a fishfinder if you want it-this is plenty for 99.9% of the time.

leashes save gear, but beware of having too many things leashed, as all those cords can be dangerous in the surf.

Thank you everyone for such great advices. I've tried surf launching on my nephew's Hobie with stabilizers and it was incredible and just ordered a set myself. I was thinking about just putting a couple of the Scotty rod holders for now until I get the hang of the Outback then come back to the forum for Fish Finders, etc etc. You guys have been great, thank you so much.

By the way, any suggestions for a roof rack that will fit a toyota corolla? I currently have a Thule set on my SUV but dont want to run up the miles on it and want to take advantage of the small commuter car. I've looked at the Hobie roof pads and strap downs but don't know if that will do it or have anyone have experiences with it? Any suggestion would be great!

Around here, that would be incredible..ly dangerous. Just my 2C. For lakes, maybe they have advantages if you want to stand.
For saltwater beach launches they would be a huge liability.

I used to have an Outback myself and if I can find the setup here somewhere, I'll post some pictures. BTW, welcome aboard. Hope to fish with you soon.
If you look under kayak rigging tips on the third page, I have share my setup with Santiago of how I
went about my rigging for the Outback. Good luck! If you have any questions, just PM me anytime.

Your question about Calero it is fine for newbies---Coyote Reservoir is even better due to lots of sandy area right next to the ramp.  You can even pull off to the side of the ramp and be out of everybody's way while you prep your hobie.  Last time I went to Calero the water was so low I had to trek a bit through some mud---still a goo spot though.----Jeff

Oh yeah your doomed!  Congrats on your purchase.  I have an 08' Outback (OB) it's pimped with (Besides the built in rod holders) 2 Scotty rod holders, just forward of drive, a Eagle Cuda 240 FF/GPS combo,(Starboard side forwaqrd of the tray) multipul stickers, and Scotty flush mount for my little Scotty lake troller down rigger. (Installed just behind the seat, port side.)

I've not had any issues yet (So far) with my stock "scupper cart" but others on this site have, so just kinda keep that in mind if you end up towing the hull over rough ground loaded or empty.  Try to not bounce the hull.

WTTM!

Welcome aboard!  Unless you want to sail or stand-up fishing with the OB, you don't really need a stabilizer.  You have to try really hard to flip an Outback!  :smt003
