Is this for SCUBA dive or skin dive?

Hey Andy,
They are designed to be efficient once you flip upside down! Know what I mean. Just make sure you get familiar with releasing the harness before you get into trouble. It is supposed to be more comfortable than having a weight belt around your waist. There are pros and cons for both, only one way to find out! Did you get a wetsuit?

I can't see how that's worth ten dollars a pound.  Get the straps and find some lead sheets and cut your self something similar.  Seems like that wouldn't be impossible to come up with.

Can't wait to see your first report.  I'm looking for suit for now and want to try soon.

You don't need an ass. Rubber weight belts hold themselves in place. Nylon belts are more likely to slide around.

Quick Pros/Cons list:
(Not complete, but good sampling)

Pros:
- Even distribution of weight; spreads it out more comfortably.
- Good for people with back problems, especially lower back.
- More comfortable out of water if you're hiking in somewhere.
- Center of buoyancy* in water more centered.
- Good for people with round bellies &/or no butts.  ;)

Cons:
- Bigger risk of tangling if you're trying to drop your belt.
- Pricey, subconciously divers less likely to ditch
- Bit more cumbersome to use
- Rubber shoulder straps squeak (really only an issue for wsb)
- Placement of waist portion can hinder proper breathe-up**
- Cinched weightbelt can help seal water out of 2-piece suit bit better.

* Center of buoyancy in water is different than center of gravity on land due to the buoyant volume of your lungs.
** Proper weight belt placement is ideally on hips rather than waist.  This allows one to take full unrestricted breaths.

I bought a pair of "suspenders" from my local dive shop for 20 bucks.  I use them with my rubber weight belt.  They are made from 1.5 inch nylon webbing and cross in the back.  They have a quick release on each breast.  i love these things.  I don't need to cinch down so hard on my weight belt, my weights don't shift around during the dive, and the walk in to the dive site is WAY better.

For free-diving, the only downside I've encountered is that the quick releases sometime catch on stuff.  Although that doesn't allow the belt to fall off or anything.  In all my years of diving, I've actually never had to drop my weight belt (it fell off once), but I can see if you had to that this would be a bit more complicated.  Just one release on the belt like normal, but you'd have to pull the straps off your shoulders too.

I like em.

Dave

To clarify, suspenders are nothing like a harness and provide less benefits with the same tangle risks.  The main advantage of a harness is the large back plate weight.  With the front weights, everything is spread out more evenly instead of a thin band around your lower back.

If anything, most people could benefit from a crotch strap to keep the belt from sliding toward the armpits on descent.  A rubber belt helps with this sliding, but most people cinch it on their waist, which makes sense.  However, this constructs breathing a bit.  The proper placement is a bit lower on the hips, which allows for full ventilation... BUT introduces the sliding issue.  It's all about balance & finding what's comfortable.

Myself... I've gotten lazy - I just use a simple rubber belt and cinch it around my waist loosely.  :)
