Yes, you do not want to be in a red shirt on an away mission, especially if the end credits only refer to you as "crewman #..." 

But red would give you the best of both worlds.  On the surface, you'd be highly visible.  When you dive down, the red will turn grey and you'd be fully camo'd out.
