I think FF is useful if its territory that you do not know. other than that its probably not necessary.  generally speaking i use the FF more for structure and depth than for fish, as I don't particularly trust electronics.

Totally agree.  Once I got a FF, it made each trip much more interesting knowing depth, structure, and temperature.  As far as trusting for actual fish, I look at it in a relative way - did I see 1 or 2 fish, or a bunch - gives me an idea of what's available.

My 2 cents,

I like to go for 100% reliability balanced with convenience, pool noodles can't fail, dry bags and even flotation bags can, and like Ben said they fit really well between the scupper holes and the outside of the hull, mine just stay there permenantly. I was able to squeeze 6 regular size ones in on each side of my Marauder. Pls 2 in the bow, and 2  in the stern, having ended up with a cracked hull full of water, I don't go anywhere without my noodles or bilge pump.

I love my FF/GPS, combo.  I like to know what's under me, and since I don't get to fish that often I love being able to mark spots that have good structure.

Also I went for the handheld aerial flares because they're less bulky than a gun/cartridge setup

Have fun, be safe,

Hey Michael,

I found a site where they're selling HX850s for $174.99 including shipping and no tax.  Just incase you haven't bought the 851 yet.  I just order one and it's schedule to arrive next Thursday.  Here's the link...

Thanks for the information.  Since I went ahead and ordered a FF with GPS, I decided the 851s was unnecessary and so I ordered one from the link you gave me and it is going to be coming next week.  Thanks again!
