That guy talking about that "big dumb bastard" was hilarious.  Thanks for the laugh.  I think those AK lings are dumber than down here.  I've seen lings hitchhike, but never so you could just gill them by hand.  Amazing.

Lings are awesome fish...I still say "gilling" a 45lb fish just for a photo is irresponsible.

I have never caught one, hopefully that changes this year. What is a better way to hold this fish? Sorry if I am naive.

Most of us kayakers are using the "grip lipper" to hold the "toothy" fish  :smt003

I like to use a net but most of the time I release them in the water with pliers if I'm not going to keep them.

Don't stick your hand in there mouth even if you have extra thick gloves.  My friend Brian had some really thick leather gloves on and pulled one into his lap.  Then he gave it a Canadian shampoo with his thumb still inside the mouth.  The front teeth were like nails in the coffin on his poor thumb.

My point was that they should have just released it in the water even if that compromised a good photo op. Holding a fish that size from one point on its mouth or head puts a lot of pressure on it. I don't know. I'm probably over-reacting, but if you're going to release a fish, do it right.

Release? Huh? Release? I love to fish and love to eat. If you're going to release'em be nice, if not beat 'em and eat 'em.
