I lived across the Columbia from Portland most of my life. If you don't mind the rain Portland is great. If you do, it's only 18 months  :smt002.

But, really, it's a great place for all the reasons mentioned and more. It's been a very long time, but steelhead/salmon fishing in the Lewis and others rivers ~1 - 1.5 hours north of Portland was outstanding. If you develop a longing for a bigger city, Seattle is just 3 hours north on the Puget Sound, one of my favorite places.

Don't forget Skiing on Mt. Hood, and Mt. Bachelor, or fishing on all the lakes in Central Oregon like Odell, Crane Prairie, Cresent, Wickiup Res, Davis, Waldo, Prineville Res, Billy Chinook, Detoit, Paulina/East.

The Portland area is fishing nirvana. All the best fishing you could ever want all within a 2 hours drive. If I were to get a job in Portland I would NOT be mad. :smt001

Thanks all.  I'm not into the big city scene.  I'll gladly take mountains & streams any day! Once I get settled and into the work "groove" and off shift times, I plan to do a lot more fishing.  Have to see how big my corp apartment really is and if I can keep my kayak in it.

Hey Troy,  there's lot's to love about Portland.  Yes, it's a big city, but within 30 minutes you can be in the country and two hours gets you to the ocean or the timberline of Mt. Hood.   We have several different runs of salmon to choose from which are still open to fishing and our rockfish/lingcod season never closes.

In terms of non-fishing.. if you love either beer or coffee, it doesn't get much better then Portland.

Once you get to Portland let me know.  If I can't take you out fishing I'll hook you up with someone who can.

Lots of great music, Powell's books, The MAX, mass transit 4.50 for an all day pass. Great people, lots of fishing, Voodoo donuts, Portland International Raceway , Portland Expo Center, A great Zoo, Great Sturgeon fishing, Malibu raceway.
Portland is a great place, I spent alot of time there last year. I would move there in a second if all my family was not in Central Cal!!!
