Had a big itch that needed to be scratched big time. So last minute thing, sorry no hookup posted. Tried Berryessa this morning and when I got to the launch at
Capell Cove, the parking lot was almost full. Since I've never fished the lake
before, I didn't know any better and still launched the kayak there. The morning
was beautiful with some light breeze to start the day. Came prepared with some
large minnows for bait. Immediately I had two of my line snagged at the same time. :smt013 So retied again and send a couple of minnow down. Drifted with the wind around the water edge for about an hour and half before I had some
action. Caught my very first SMB. Yahoo! A bass fisherman came over to see
what I had caught and he said, nice smallmouth. So it was confirmed that it was
a smallie. I stayed around for a while to try my luck some more and caught two
LMB. That was it for me. On my way back to the launch, it was like traffic jam. I
know now not to use the ramp again when it is full like that. It might have been a
tournament because they all knew each other. I need one more fish and I'm done. :smt003 I am having some problem including some pictures. I'll try again after dinner.

ConGrats Jedmo!!!

Boy, After my Dismal post yesterday... Good for you!!!!

I guess ya got the morning bite, That is key... I talked to some guys that said the bite was better a couple of weeks ago, and yup, There was a tournament there today...

I've never seen them hold so consistently at 80', but that's where they were at 10am,

they were not interested in much, I did better on drop shot rather than live minnows.

I got the nasty stare today from some of the bass fisherman like I didn't belong
there with the kayak. Some were super friendly. Go figure. I may need to find other alternative when launching the kayak there again. I'd like to get to know Lake Berryessa
some more. I'm sure things will change once the water comes up again though.

sure is true, in every group there are good guys and duds.  You strike me as the highroad kind of guy who makes us all look better.  :smt004

Congrats, Jedmo! :smt041
Your first small mouth is very nice!!! :smt007
yeah, that place gets very busy so I avoid there in Summer time & tournament morning...  but last time, I went there, there were only a few trailers, so can be ok.
you can use Oak shore park.  They have a carry on boat only ramp, but they only open sun rise to sun set.

Way to go Jedmo!  I know Berryessa has a good smallmouth population.  Dragging some little creature baits rigged carolina or texas style, and tube baits are really good there.  Drop shotting some small minnow baits can be killer too, if you find any fish stacked up.

Shasta Lake used to have a nice smallmouth population, but the spotted bass have really taken over.

Take care!  Matt
