Mavericks possible next week

Demian Bulwa, Chronicle Staff Writer

Thursday, December 3, 2009

(12-03) 13:35 PST HALF MOON BAY -- Big waves are on their way to the Bay Area, raising the possibility that the Mavericks Surf Contest could be held next week - possibly Tuesday morning.

Organizers, who have had to scrap the contest two out of the last three years because of stubbornly calm seas, are looking for a rare mix of giant swells and clear weather at the Mavericks surf spot north of Half Moon Bay.

If conditions now predicted for Tuesday hold up, the 24 surfers in the contest field will be asked to vote Sunday morning via e-mail on whether to make "the call" and hit the water in 48 hours.

Contest co-director Katherine Clark said conditions could change. A series of storms is predicted to roll over California next week, and the waves hitting the Bay Area may turn out to be too big even for champion surfers.

Organizers determined to hold the event this season started the season early, running it from November through March.

The 24 invited surfers are voting for the first time this year on when to hold the contest. They were asked to weigh in on a date last month but rejected it.

I think I may have to add some weight to the pots/traps. Although a death wish it would be cool to paddle out and watch from a safe distance.

I just heard something about this on KCBS a few minutes ago. The first thing I thought was the weather is supposed to be bad here then, so this is just promo BS by the people that got rid if Jeff Clark.  The weather has to be good to surf. Why would they call the media when a storm is coming in? They hold the contest when the weather is good and old waves from the other side of the time line come in. Sorry about the rant, I'm a little bitter.

I bet they hold out until prime ocnditions fall on a weekend.  Last time they held it, it fell on a Saturday, and conditions were pretty amazing weatherwise, smaller-ish waves by mav standards.  I got screwed by my chopper fiasco, but Backcountry scored some kickass pictures.

seriously, i'd feel safer in and under the water than on top of it in a yak.

Opening day of crab season was a nice day and it was 17', 17 seconds. There was 50 big wave surfers out there. I tried to give you guys the heads up, but me and my butt surfin' buddy were the only paddlers in the lagoon. There was one guy in a sot with a wetsuit and a helmut that was fighting the walls of white water out by mushroom rock. I got tired just watching him.
There is plenty of days when the conditions are good to look at the big waves besides the day of the contest. I think the last time the contest was on a saturday we went to Bolinas.
