nah....I got my reasons. I already made my goal of a salmon over the 20# range. My goals for the future:

- a legal sturgeon
- a striper over 10 #'s
- a brown trout over 10 #'s
- a small mouth bass over 5 #'s (a long shot)

- and a date with Jennifer Aniston :smt007 ....heard she's on a prowl  :smt006

Mooch,

Jenn mentioned something to me about fishing San Luis this weekend.  She'll see you there Saturday morning.  She'll bring the bait, you bring the rod.

Take your gibbs minnow. Cut the crappy stock split ring off. Replace with a high quality ring, then add swivel, add another split ring, then add hook. It spaces your hook out a little more and sees to result in more solid hook ups in the lower mouth. Better hookups= more fish landed.

Unfortunately I'm flying out of town on Sunday or I'd join you all.  I've fished this section of the river many, many times in a boat.....so here's a helpful suggestion.  Bring your splitters, your quick-fish and your double bladed silvertrons in case you have to troll.

Jigging is a very effective method for catching Salmon and it's what I prefer.   However, it can get very windy some days and makes it hard to drift.   You want your jig as straight up and down as possible.  When it's windy, you tend to drift too fast and the line / jig go into the water at an angle.

On a boat, you use the electric trolling motor to slow you down.   If you don't have an electric trolling motor, your only real chance at hooking up is trolling.

I've caught salmon jigging and trolling both quick-fish and silvertrons.  I usually use 2-4 oz jigs and 3-6 oz submarine weights when trolling.

A couple other suggestions:

1) Until you get past the first yacht club, stay near the east bank (same side as you launch from) and try to be within 10-20 feet from the bank.

2) Once you pass the yacht club the river will bend south, move over to the West bank until you get to the second yacht club.

3) When you get to the end of your drift at Garcia bend, it's worth drifting past Garcia launch at least once (if there aren't too many boats).  I've seen and caught a ton of fish between the first and second buoy.  At that point, you should be on the west side of the buoy but closer to the center of the river.

If you hook up, they are a blast to fight!   I've never caught one from a kayak but I can't imagine netting one by myself.  I'd have a plan to have everyone else to get out of the way as you fight it and have someone come over to help net it.

I hope some of this helps.  Good Luck!

P.S.  -  Mooch - I landed a 15 lb striper in this strech of the river trolling for Salmon.   On the flip side, a friend of mine landed a 32 lb Salmon jigging for stripers.

You have to net your own Fish to qualify for the big fish pool right?

Good question. The answer is YES.:smt041

I've been making and receiving calls to arrange a caravan from the bay area... and it looks like we're leaving here at 6am and plan to be at the Miller ramp before 8am.  Hopefully, by starting earlier than last time, we'll have better luck and avoid the pleasure boaters, jet skiers, and other noise makers that spook fish.

Chris, his friend Colm, Freddie, and I will be leaving from San Leandro in two vehicles.  We plan to drop off one vehicle at the end at Garcia Bend.
