One of the things I've seen is that people go out for their first time in rough water or bad vis and it ruins their idea of diving. If you go out and the vis is bad or the water is rough then don't expect it to be fun for a beginner. My first time out the vis was about 2 feet and I thought diving in NorCal was a waste of time. I learned a lot once I started diving in better conditions.

You can't have much more fun than diving with a gun in 20' vis. We will be diving on the 7th at Albion. I will have extra gear if anyone wants to join.

Eric you will probably need around 18 pounds but it varies by body composition and wetsuit.

Merv thanks....Thats what I was thinking do you all use the regular lead weights or the 'soft' one. I see both when I look for used stuff.

I have used both. Some people tell me the soft weights are much more comfortable. I can't tell a difference in comfort. It may depend on how your hips are shaped (I don't know). Speaking for myself, I will never use the soft weights again. My son and I have switched to the rubber belt with hard weights. The big advantage to the rubber belt is that you stretch it when you buckle it on and then it stays in place. The deeper you dive, the more your suit compresses. Once your suit compresses a nonstretch belt can get loose and slip around.

If you know you are going to ab dive only then you probably won't ever need to go deeper than 15 or 20 feet. You know if you go out with us and see us shooting fish you are going to want to do it also. You will be suprised at how deep you can dive once you start practicing. The deeper dives can really compress your suit.

This is my first year spearfishing and I was shooting fish at 35 feet at the Randy Fry competition with the incredible AbMan. My goal is to get near 60 next year so I can shoot some fat vermillion.

You don't need to be near 60 to shoot reds.  It helps, but there are lots of reds in shallower waters too.  :)

I think this book should be read by anyone getting into freediving. It has improved my ability and safety. It's dry but it has essential info.

Hey Fuzz, I would love to dive with you. Let me know if you have some time to share some of your experience.
