The main cove at Ft Ross is a very friendly place to start a beginner.  No huge abs but if you can train the diver to relax and hit anything deeper than 15 ft, there are legal abalone all over the place.

If diving from shore, you take the dirt trail that cuts to the right halfway from the main parking lot to the bottom kayak launching spot.  Note: just past the dirt road that also cuts to the right.  There is a little wood bench or something at the trailhead. This trail cuts to the right and drops you right down to the water; keep an eye out for poison oak.

This part of the cove is almost always protected from the prevailing north/northwest swell and wind.  Very safe and comfy for newbies.

John

Thanks for the info John. Google Maps even show the bench you described.

Anyone have room for 1 more kayak?  I'll be happy to share the gas money and provide snacks  :smt003  My pick-up truck needs a brake job so I worry about the steep hills before the Fort.  I can meet you anywhere within 30 miles from Benicia if it's not on your way.

Dr Habenero, the wind and swell are forecast to come back up on saturday. Hop off the fence and come fishing with us.

oh well, I took the day off already. Will be there. If nothing else, it's at least a day away from work.
