I'm looking to get certified so i can get into spear fishing does anyone know of a good school to go to to get this done?

I've heard that Steeles dive shop on telegraph in Oakland teaches a good class as well as Bamboo Reef in the city. I'm sure either one will take good care of you.

Do you mean certify for SCUBA right?  If you free dive for spear fishing then you don't have to be certified!

ya i meant for the scuba i don't think i could hold my breath that long while trying to learn a new method of fishing under water. Thanks for the help Eliot I'll definitely look into them both.

You should get certified... BUT most spearfisherman freedive as the bubbles scare away fish.  Wallins in San Carlos offers a Free Diving Class.  SCUBA and Free Diving are completly different disciplines.  Go SCUBA first and have some fun.  http://www.wallins.com/
