Was wondering how who and when NCKA was born? What made you mad men create this community? Who were the first members? This site has been awsome to me in more than one way! Well! Lets here how it all started! Bueler? Bueler? Bueler.

I'm sure others know this better then me.

NCKA was born December of 2004.
Previous incarnations where a yahoo group and a NorCal subforum on http://www.kayak4fish.com

At some point Kayak4Fish was having server issues, a single subforum on that SoCal site wasn't really cutting it and the Yahoo group was also limited.  That is when Bill was kind enought to step up and create NCKA.

As for who the first members where, that's easy.  Take a look at the member list and sort it by date.  Most of the guys in the first page or so where members of the Yahoo Group and the Kayak4Fish subforum.

I think a sticky thread up top explaining the beginings would be fantastic!  Just like FM1, this community has been very good for me in the sense that I have met some fantastic people, made some lifelong friends, and gathered so much information and guidance from everyone it is remarkable.  Great post there Fish Master1!  :smt006

I think that sums it up nicely. I can't think of much to add other than it was a very different place than it is today :-)

Being a geek, I just cant help myself sometimes...  :smt003  There is this cool tool called the Wayback Machine on archive.org that caches internet sites, so you can go back and remember old times  :smt002

NCKA.ORG Was aparently orignally owned by the "Northside Christian Karate Academy" in May of 2001, and looked like this:

http://web.archive.org/web/20010520164155/http://www.ncka.org/ :smt044 Guess it has always kicked ass?

Here is what it the first (archived) version of the site looked like:

http://web.archive.org/web/20050616010130/http://www.ncka.org/

The are even some archived pages with the very sad details about Chef's battle with cancer, and how caring and supportive NCKA was for him...   :smt010

Wow...  The website sure has changed over the years:

http://web.archive.org/web/20050215124639/www.norcalkayakanglers.com/bb/

And it sure has grown quickly!

Great thread, memory lane time.  Bill should appoint an official NCKA historian.

Before the yahoo group, many of us congregated on Spike's kayakfishing.com site.  I recall in 2002 collecting as many norcal emails from kf'ing.com and sending out a solicitation from my grad school groupwise account for a saturday hookup at New Brighton.  About 4 boats showed up and I was sooooo excited to see people.  I don't even remember who showed, but i was still fishing a bare Hobie Maui with crate and I thought it was the funnest thing ever.

I joined the yahoo group around that same time or shortly thereafter.  Then moved to kayak4fish.com.  Then chuck told me about NCKA.  Looking back, i'm pleasantly surprised to see the growth of this site and the sport.  really taken off :smt051

Interesting. BTW, when and/or why did it become .com instead of .org?

Quote from: bsteves
We're actually both a .com and a .org

http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com and http://www.ncka.org

I don't know what happened to http://www.norcalkayakanglers.org but http://www.ncka.com is currently parked and probably for sale.

Brian

Ah, didn't even realize it. Thanks, Brian.

As I recall, Elric started the yahoo group because we were chaffing under the posing guidelines at pierfishing.com.  So that's probably the great-grandparent.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.
