I have a few cyalume (glow sticks) In my hatch. I just have the green ones. I need to get my hands on white and red. I like them cuz batteries are never an issue, they are cheap, and they last long enough. Plus I can clip one to the tip of a rod in my rear holder and it will get it high above the water. While technically not and 'electric torch' I am hoping it would pass. Anyone know? Oh and if you want to buy them....now is the time (Halloween and all). But they are online year 'round

The encounter with the Sherrif occurred during that last outing, but before I had gotten my browns

I paddle at night alot and while I would never try to discourage anyone from being "safe" there are some things to consider that havent been mentioned. Please consider my tactics as a alternative perspective and may not be for everyone. I know Ive never been the poster boy for safety but my practices do come from real time on the water at night.
I like to run almost completely stealth ,with no deck lights at all, and only using a headlamp when needed. I depend on solid situational awareness other than making myself a beacon.
The number one reason I like to run stealth is to preserve my natural night vision. After exposure to light, it takes up to 30 minutes for your eyes to readapt to the darkness. This is especially important when casting at secondary structures. Using a red headlamp helps reduce your NV recovery time.
A close second is the insects that are brought in by artificial lights. Even using a red lamp brings in swarms of bugs right on top of you, especially in the summer months. Ive had this uncomfortable situation at all elevations but bass waters are the worst.
I have been fortunate to have only had one "negative" encounter with law enforcement on the water at night and I believe that it was largely due to the fact that I startled him when I said hello. There was a irritated tone but no mention of why I was running without lights. Of course my NV was ruined by the lights he blasted me with but I wasnt cited or threatened.
here are a few shots of the insect factor

HS that's a crackup!!!  was he lights out also? just hangin? and u pulled a ninja move on him... :smt005

the only night  fishing I've done was on blue lakes after the sun went down, I was using 2 head lamps one facing forward and one back... and boats could see me real easy... and bugs were a problem...  although one time I was intently playing a fish and I turn around and theres a PB coming up on my 6, but the guy had seen me, and all was good... But I bout jumped out of my yak... :smt003  guy had cut his engine and was just gliding up on me.... :smt001

That sheriff must of had something going on...something had recently happened that for some reason he chose to take it out on Marmite :smt009  I have a lot of respect for the law... but once in awhile "$h^t happens"

FWIW the sheriff patrol at Lake Almanor has been that aggressive for lack of running lights for as long as I can remember.  My dad grew up in Chester, I can ask him how long this has been going on, but the first time I remember getting harassed there for no lights on a canoe was 4th of July 1986.
