Brrrr!!! How long were you in the water?

~2 hours, 10 mins.  WAY longer than anticipated, but safety was covered, snacks/hot fluids on board (didn't need any of it).

By the end, lost sensation in my right toes.  but otherwise, it wasn't too bad, and I'm pretty confident for this saturday.  Besides, shouldn't we all be doing physical training for that monster paddle to Lucia?

I wonder how many calories you burned that day?  Just being that cold for that long, I'm sure you burned thousands...  not including the workout!

We were all pretty starving afterward for sure.  I know I'm in trouble when I start thinking about chocolate donuts in the middle of a big exertion.  Maybe it was Aaron's timely jokes or the HT distraction, but for some reason I wasn't near choco donut territory yesterday.

Just wanted to post up results from last saturday's race from TI.  Great conditions helped me finish in 36:42.  Hit a set of huge bowwaves from a ship or something about midrace.  Tossed me around a fair bit.  Also had an upset stomach, cost me ~ 2 mins or so.  Thanks to pisciform for guiding me through my training swim.

Another finish shot

I thought about what Danglin said, and he's totally right.  Wanting to enjoy my current conditioning before it diminished, I drove over the hill the day after the race and swam the course at the Santa Cruz Wharf.  About 1.8 miles from Main Beach around the Pier, over to the Lane and finished at Cowells.  Surprisingly did it in 38 min.  A really awesome swim under fantastic conditions to finish off a pretty successful open water season.

I reluctantly have to hang up my goggles for the year.  Wwimming is just too risky in the winter with the flu season, etc.  So I'll just have to wait for next year and start it all over again.

2010 Goals: 1) Swim Across Tahoe; and 2) Big Shoulders Swim in Lake Michigan.  Who's with me?? :smt006

Also, if anyone is interested in being a "kayak pilot" for open water swimmers in SF Bay, let me know.  There are races and training sessions all year long for which they ALWAYS need small craft escorts.  They pay $25 or $35 per outing,  each outing lasts between 1 and 2 hours.

Hell if your gonna be out on the water anyway, might as well get a workout and get paid for it!

PM me for the info.

WTG man....glad your training and event went well....

Next season if you want to do any training down in Santa Cruz area and want somebody to paddle out with you I would be more than happy to help...it would be an honor...

Maybe do the aquatic Wharf to Wharf from SC down to Cap??

Congratulations again and thanks for sharing!!!!!

Sincerely,

Jim

Wow, good time - better than you expected, isn't it?  Definitely better than the hours it took during full current.  :smt001

No sweat. I'm inspired by you guys who take these challenges . . . but I'll still stay in the boat!  :smt003
