Its the people who care and listen to these feelings, that practice moderation ensuring a continued fishing sport. i C@R almost everything i catch, snap a few pics then away they go. As for sharks i never harvest them. whoever caught that shark knew it was a female, sharks are probably one of the easiest fish to sex, some people just don't care, they are the ones that in time ruin it for everyone.

While I understand this sentiment and mostly agree with it ...

If (and that's a big if) the DFG is doing their job, they are supposed to regulate such things at a macro level so that nothing gets "ruined for everyone".  Populations can withstand harvest.  The overall "management" choices are supposedly being made for us.  After that, it's a personal choice.  My personal choice is to do my part in the conservation of the resource, which is above and beyond what DFG mandates.  I will advocate others to do something similar, but I try to stop short of passing judgement ...

i agree its up to us as fishermen to do are part, thats where the difference will be made. The goverment has got their heads so far up their butts they can't help anyone, all they do is keep puking out more and more bs laws and regs.

At the last Elk I pulled in a good verm (22", 7#11oz.). At fillet time a big pool of green goo came rushing out and was really bummed to hear from bluefin17 that they were all eggs. We pulled the otolith and turns out it was over 30 years old.  :smt009

While nobody likes undue regulation if you study a little you'll find the reason. There's a lot of good regulation out there that helps us. The bummer is when you find out that it's put in place because of a lawsuit. In that case we know who's really to blame.

Awesome info, Allen.  It'd be great to have that as a sticky somewhere.

Also gives me a new insult to add to my vocabulary: Lingdik.

Do you know that most male lingcod have spawned at least once by 24".  But females in CA may or my not have spawned once by 24".

From his post on page 1 of this thread: "Adult males can be distinguished externally from females by the presence of a small, conical papilla behind the anal vent".  He also has a picture of the "organ" there  :smt003

For the most part, they breed in the winter/spring when the season is closed.

This is an excellent thread.

One of my first trips out I hook this little rock fish, maybe 10". I look at the guy that's with me and ask if that's a keeper and he says, "Sure, there's no size limit, you'll get a couple nice fillets from that". Other trips i go out and see people tossing those little guys back and keeping stuff closer to the 18" - 20". Now I read that might be a 20+ year old fish.  It's a little like being asked "paper or plastic" at check out. Chainsaws or oil?  :smt002

I guess what I'm coming to is maybe we could put together a sticky thread to collect intelligence on the different species we fish. Knowing how to sex Leopards and Lings is great. Maybe there are ideal slot sizes for some rockies? I'm too new to even ask the right questions, but you get where I'm going. Not to put pressure on anyone, just to have the info there for those who want to discriminate.
