Nasty Red Tide seemed to kill the bite around Capitola today...seemed to be getting murkier farther out as the day went on...spots that had decent water in the AM were brown and nasty when I tried them again later in the PM... :smt009

Spent hours and hours in FAC ass-brown water hoping to find a honey hole where I could catch some decent fish, but no luck today...only brought home 3 medium sized black and yellow rockfish...

On the positive side, got to paddle in for a beer-break on the pier with my old Peace Corps buddy Greg, and my neighbor Andy and his friend Wendy paddled out on their longboards right before sunset to fish for awhile and have a beer or three...they managed to bring home two small rockies AND Andy got to catch and release a 4 foot shark right after I left!!! Wasn't a leopard, so not sure what kind it was...

All in all, a fun LONG day on the water fishing, if not catching... :smt002

Was gonna go out again tomorrow, but totally used up all my WAF being out OTW for so long today, and I doubt the water will be any better, so will stay in and help the wife around the house instead... :smt012

Here are some pics of the day...

Sincerely,

Jim

Cool pictures Jim. Thanks for sharing. Too bad there was some red tide. BTW, would you know how long would the red tide will be hanging around? I have a
buddy that's being wanting to try Capitola for some rockfishing.

Thanks guys...

Jedmo, not sure how long the RedTide is meant to hang around...if I hear any news on when it will leave/how long it will be here I will let you know...

I knocked out all the chores on my honey-do list this AM and got the hall-pass to go out for a few hours in the PM...this weekend is the Begonia Festival in town so there were tons of people and plenty of nice scenery/eye-candy... :smt002

Water still sucked, but I used a glow scampi sprayed with a little scent and that seemed to be enough to get the fish to bite a little better than yesterday... :smt003

Got a fat 15 inch GrassCod, a nice Brown, a Blue, and 4 medium/small Black and Yellows for our Labor Day BBQ tomorrow... :smt004

Felt good to go back out and catch a few fish even in the less than ideal conditions, and I am stoked that we have fresh fish to eat and share with our friends at the BBQ!!!  :smt001

Here are some pics...the long-haired munchkin on the right is mine (Valentina Alexandra) and the other two girls belong to my buddy Freddy...

Sincerely,

Jim

Nice catch.  Hope that red tide doesn't spoil that big fish derby at the wharf tomorrow.

Thamks for the report nice haul.

BTW I love this pic. Brings back memories of the way I use to fish up and down Malibu in the late 90's before fishing of kayaks.

red tides are hard to predict, they can linger forever or blow out.

Nice catch out of Capitola, you seem to be getting the place dialed in.  Better get a shotgun ready Dad to chase away all those boys, your daughter is beautiful.  Maybe you and Freddy should see if you can get a two for one deal at the gun shop!

Thanks guys...

Yeah Freddy and I definitely need to look into some firepower!!
 :smt002

Not sure about right in front of Capitola, but today I snuck away from the family BBQ for a bit on Seacliff and paddled back past the Cement Boat to the ShipRock area and the water was fine...good sign for Cap I hope...

Ditto! it reminds me of pulling Rock lobster nets and handline fishing for rockies at the world famous left hand break on the West Coast of South Africa, Elands Bay in the 80's & 90's
