Went to Capitola today. Launched a 8am to lake like conditions. Bait was plentiful, with bird diving everywhere.
I was able to make 7 perfect size sardines, then proceeded to fish the outside of the surf at New Brighton.

Fished for about an hour with some PB in the same general area.  Around 10 am, super lifeguard in his jeep starts yelling at everyone to stay 1000 yards away from the surf. ???? (please note...there was on one on the beach) Gave him a friendly wave and continue fishing.  :smt002.

11:00AM
THEN....the bite turns on! The boat next to lands 4 BUTTS (No problems). I get Nailed 5...yes 5 Times. NONE STICK! I was literally ready to take my life vest of and pull a "inglourious bastard"--"the Bear Jew" on these BUTTS.  :smt013
Every bite left long long gash marks on my sardine.  Can't complain too much, got to go fishing today!

Some of those sardines are so big you have to employ a stinger hook or you will get short bit every time. Did you use one?

Did you let out some line to give it time to swallow the bait?  Hope you got better luck next time.  Thanks for the report Keith.

Gave it line, I was using a smaller sardine too. I guess it wasn't my day. Better luck next time.

Thanks for the report Keith. I would love to try that place someday. I hope I can
see a hookup the next time around. Better luck next time. I'm sure you did
everything right. It just wasn't your day.

Hey noodleboy, do you paddle a yellow Ocean  Kayak?

I think the local halis have been going to school with the seabass in the area and are moving up to genius status.

Yeah, i'm on the prower 13.

I agree. That area was hot yesterday around 11-12pm. The area I worked was right in front of the first houses on the NB beach. Funny how close the fish really area. T

I did however manage to hook a sea Lion which practically spooled me, until it broke the line. I felt really bad....What can we do to minimize hook up with Birds and Sea Lions?  :smt009

I passed by you on my way into the kelp, sumo looking guy on an orange trident 15 following my son Nathan paddling a green trident 13.

As to the seals, as soon as you figure out its a seal, I put my thumb pressure on the spool.  I want the line to break as soon as possible.  When I have done that in the past, it usually breaks right around the hook so I am not leaving tons of line in the water.  For birds, just pay close attention and move your bait away if they start to dive on it.

Thanks for the report! I have had a few days like that too. As for the sea lions I have found a 9mm works well and saves on tackle  :smt044 Having all your gear stowed in seal skin bags looks cool too  :smt044 Just keep smiling and know your time will come.

Porky, Stoggie and I were out there as well ('cept we went north). No fish to report. Unless Stoggie pulled one after we left. I managed one scratched bait. Porky and I saw a big ass deal seal lion with a massive bite mark (landlord I'm sure). Porky took a pic so hopefully he'll post it. The water was like glass but there was one hell of a shore break when we came in. Porky had a 'close call' but saved the roll and all his gear.

Sorry for the jack but it kinda fits in this thread
