Bill,

Is that Abu rated for 14 lb. test ?  If it is you will probably under gun.  I think you have caught Dorados in Texas.  I do not know what size they were.

But a Yellowtail fights a lot harder.  It is like that first run of a Do Do but times it by ten.  Do Do are hard fighters but they jump and any fish that jumps get tired more quickly than one that will fight you down deep.

The Yellows do get tired and give up in the end.  Tuna seem to never give up.

You may be able to land the smaller ones on that reel (10 to 15 lbs).  A 20 lber will give you a run for your money and anything above 20 will kick you a**.

Hey Bill,

If we do go together I can loan you some stuff.  I only have Trinidads, Calcuttas, Accurates, Penn Internationals, Shimano Tiagras, TLD 2-speeds, Pro Gear, Avets and even a few ABU's.

I was know to bring over 20 outfits on some of the longer long range trips.  Over Kill...Yes....but if one of my outfits malfunction.  There was always BACK-UP.

Bill:

You will need something bigger.  For a yt you need a 20# or better yet a 30# outfit.  Jacks are ridiculously strong and fast.  When I got bit at LJ the line was FLYING off of the reel before I missed the hookup.  SCAllen got spooled or nearly so on his salmon combo before he lost his fish.  They are an entirely differnt level of fish than anything we have around here if you get into the 30-40# units they have been hooking.

I was trying to get down there with Ken but have a wedding to attend and a baptism also.  Some time in march sounds good.  We should all pick a weekend soon for those that can't make it on the 27th.

I know it's impossible to accomodate everyone's schedules, but Kevin and I would like to know what dates (Fri-Sun) in Feb or March is good for a La Jolla roadtrip.

Please post which dates work for you if you're seriously interested in going.

As for me, the last weekend this month (24th-27th)  is the soonest I can go, but any weekend in March may actually work better.

Yeah Feb. is looking tough for me as well.

March is all good. As long as I have enough advanced notice (3-4 weeks) I can go when ever. Later in the month is better for me.
