We went out on a Hobbs Lab Fishing Trip in order to celebrate my new job.  We went out ocean fishing since I had such fun fishing Albion and the ocean conditions were suppose to be much nicer.  We got there around 6:30 to see Adam (FisHunter) was already getting ready to go out and he told us that Freddie was already out on the water.  By the way Freddie, nice truck.....I think Naoaki is in love.:smt007  Sortly after we got there Eric B showed up as well.  It was pretty slow fishing in the morning, but once the sun came out it got a little better.  I caught some nice looking rockfish on my favorite lure ( purple megabait), which gave me an upgrade for AOTY, but I was hoping to catch a cab or ling.  No such luck though! :smt085  Naoaki was the cab master and it seemed like he was catching them left and right.  We stayed out a little too long and the wind really started picking up, which made it really hard to get back since we drifted pretty far.  At first, is was a little scary cuz Naoaki and I were in the Tandem and it seemed like we weren't making any progress back to shore despite how hard we were both paddling.  After my brief freak out, we made it back just fine.

I had a great time fishing with everyone and thanks for all the support and encouragement when I caught my red.  You guys really make the fishing that much more enjoyable and I hope to fish with everyone again real soon.  :smt006

It was a little cold (but I saw Freddie on savage again) :cold.  The ocean was nice & calm.
Fishing was pretty slow, but managed to get some Cabs.
Wind picked up quick in the afternoon & got a little choppy and made the tandem unstable but made it back ok.
Had great time fishing w/ guys & my girl. :smt002

It was nice fishing with you all!  I took home a couple small blues and two blacks, which was all I could seem to entice yesterday, aparts from a few gophers and small cab that were released.

Tacos last night...  delicious!

We new it was gonna be a tough day when we pulled up late and saw Fishunter getting ready and Freddy was already on the water.  Winds had been calm all week so we new water temps would be warming, but the water was still pretty cold. We started out north expecting the wind to bring us back to the beach.  Fish started slow.  Picked up a small blue on my teaser and dropped him back down, hoping to entice a big ling to take a bit.  I paddled over a cloud of suspended fish at about 70 ft of water and dropped my ling candy down.  Bounced the bottom a few times and then felt the rod load up. I reel up slowly and the big fella starts peeling line.  I'd make up a few yards and he would take it back.  I get him about half way up and he decides to let go.  Damn! :smt013.  I reel up and paddle back north to set-up another drift.  I get back over the same area and the rode loads up again.  This time he gets himself hooked and after a few good runs I've got him on the gaff.  I give him a couple love taps and on to the game clip.  Measure him out at 34 inches, a personal best.  I'm smillin' ear to ear.  I paddle over to Naoaki and Ash to get a pic on the water, since my camera's been on the fritz since it took a dunk in Baja.  I reach back to get the fish which was attached to my rope line with a cheap carabiner.  And then all of a sudden a great day turns dark.  The caribiner snaps free of the line and there goes lingzilla with my game clip.  I make a couple swing with the gaff, but no luck, down she goes, without an AOTY pic.   :smt010.  That's the closest I have every come to actually crying on the water.  But there's no crying in fishing, and I never give up.  I managed a few cabs, the largest to 21 inches, an upgrade anyway.  The drive home was horrible as we got caught in Friday traffic.  But all in all a good day.

Ash... nice post and nice catch. The fishing was on the slow side but once high tide hit... it picked up pretty good. Too bad I had to leave the party just as it was getting started. I've always wondered about getting out there in a tandem. I still just picture it worse that what you and Naoaki said. But you guys were out there and doing it. I'm still thinking you'll have to ditch Naoaki sooner or later and go solo. I think you can handle it.

On another note... I'm surprised you didn't mention anything about Jim's fumble... err... equipment failure. Or was I not supposed to mention that. 'Nuff said for now except... I feel for you Jim... that was just tough luck I guess. Sorry about that.

I ended up with only a few keepers. Nothing really big for me. Pretty slow... mostly, I just wanted my buddy from Canada to hook into some hard pulling lings. With the ocean soooooooooo rough... I figure he'd do okay. I was wrong about that. He had a hard time keeping anything down bobbing up and down in the rough 3' swells. I just love giving him crap about it because he's such a man. Oh well... He blew chunks 15 minutes into the adventure and continued until the very end. He was very grateful to have that hell end... but, he wasn't going to call uncle. So, I'll give him props for that. I don't know what it feels like to get sea sick but he tells me it's bad. I'll take his word on it and I can't wait to get him sick, I mean... fishing again.

Freddie
