Met up with Frank (Captain Kayak) at Ft. Ross about 8:00 Saturday morning. It was foggy with no wind and mild swells and a pretty slow drift. There were two other yak fishers already out amongst the kelp, we never got their names, also saw two more fishing from a tandem. Fishing was not real fast but the fish kept biting. We didn't catch anything very big or spectacular but we both ended up with plenty of fish for supper. I got almost all blacks, I think I kept 8 of them, none very big, along with one decent copper, also caught and released a small cab and several mini blues. Frank had more variety than I did, coppers and chinas and I'm not sure what else. I used a single dropper rig with a swim bait or scampi and a shrimp fly above. White swim baits and white or blue shrimp flies were the best. Frank was using an iron jig with squid chunks. We both got approximately the same number and size of fish, just different varieties. The kelp was thick, I got snagged plenty of times. We landed at about 2:00 just as the sun was beginning to burn off the fog. The wind never really came up while we were there. I forgot to take pictures, I only got this one. Sorry you can't see Frank's smiling face, but it does show the conditions pretty well. Another good day at the fort.

Hard to beat that day in-day out. Rockfish are the staple. Thanks for the report and good job.

Color must matter.  I was out there the Tuesday before it was sunny and red was the color.  Not much interest in white ore amber scampi.  Red turned them on though.

It was a lot of fun fishing with Mike Saturday. I had to fly blind again since the FF hasn't been working but still managed to get decent number of bites. We were hoping for lings but nada that day. Like Mike said the conditions were real good with no wind and slow drift. My stringer comprised of chinas and coppers and maybe a gopher but not sure. Can't wait for the next trip.
I wouldn't go so far as to call a lingcod filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a lingcod's got personality. Personality goes a long way.
