This is a photo taken in Cambria while we were out fishing. The photo is taken from a cell phone so the quality is just ok. There were a bunch of whales in the water this morning and by buddy happend to be in the middle of the pod...

Wow that's really close. I'm surprised  he didn't get knocked out of his kayak. Cool picture.

Nice whale shot, even nicer ling!  I fished Cambria while on vacation down there a few weeks ago, couldn't figure the place out.  I've never fished kelp like that before and spent most my time freeing snags and looking for structure.  Same day I was out a kayak-diver got caught in the kelp and didn't make it...be careful around that stuff!

Awesome pic's.

Did anyone see the news story a week or two back regarding surfers and kayakers harassing whales?
It seemed to imply that you could be fined for harassing whales. My question is who decides if your harassing the whale? I mean if you are innocently fishing along and a whale breaches within 100 yards of you can you be fined  for that. I'm guessing with the with the current state of the state they'd fine you for looking at the whale wrong.

Oh well, I'll get off  my soapbox now.

I think that's meant for people who are actively pursuing the whales (and other sea mammals). If you're just chillin' and a whale pops up next to you I think you're OK...but once you start paddling towards or after the whale then you are "harrassing" it.

But like you said - it'd basically be your word vs. the word of whoever was writing the ticket.

we really had no where to go...whales were coming from all directions but shore. We sat, we fished and we were amazed. There was another guy fishing north of us and it looked like the whales came within 25 yards of him.
