Went up to Tomales Bay this AM with WAF orders to bring home sardines like we ate in Italy last summer. No problem - sabiki with squid provided almost non-stop action all morning. Sent some of them down for halibut, but all I got was two chewed baits that didn't stick. Didn't hear of anybody landing halibut today, very slow. A beautiful day on the water till it got windy in the afternoon, and my wife got way more little fishies than she needs.

It was pretty fun pulling in all those trout-size fish -- my first time getting fish on the sabiki. I kept a half dozen Mackerel and Jacksmelt in addition to two dozen sardines -- all I could fit in the bucket I brought.

She made the dish we had in Cinque Terre last year, called Tegame alla Vernazza (Sardine & Potato Bake). Quite yummy. Love those Omega-3's!

Very nice. Looks delicious. Reminds me of the fun I had jigging anchovies for the first time from the pier. Ran into some old Italian gents who made the appreciation of fresh caught fish a joy. Wonderful!

That's sweet! I was planning on doing something like that until I landed that halibut.  My plan was to fry them but that looks delisous! Sure is fun catching bait. I think I'll try my luck tommorrow.  Nice try though.  Where were you fishing?

Nice report. Sardines are under appreciated for eating as are Anchovies. The wife and I had grilled Anchovies at a Greek Restaurant that were delicious and my wife talks fondly of all the Sardine and Anchovy dishes she had Palermo and then in Salamanca in Spain as an exchange student (especially the Tapas). If she sees this, I'll be up there jigging a lot and putting some down for a more pan-shaped kind of bigger fish. That's one way to get an instant WAF point bonus.

way to go Andy!  I have tried dusting sardines with cumin and grilling them after seeing it on a TV show.  If you like cumin, its great.  Also pan fried anchovies are good.

when you, your wife, cardiologists and chefs are all happy, that is smokin :smt001

I was following in KZReelRod's wake (Friday's Heartbreak & Redemption Report), fishing just south of Hog Island in Tomales Bay. Easy launch from Nick's Cove/Miller Park ($5 parking). The Sardines seemed to be farther north than the Mackerel, of which I threw back dozens. I was using #6 hooks, I think.

Interesting on the Macks. Thinking I'll bring along a 5 wt fly rod with T-14 and a small Clouser--then once I've baited for a Hali, I'll have some fun with the Macks while waiting to hear that clicker sing. Or a Bass rod and small spoons or jigs. I fished for Spanish Mackerel and Snapper Bluefish at Cape Hatteras with light tackle and jigs as a kid while waiting for King Mackerel to take our Menhaden live bait--great fun.

Do you have the recipe for the sardine potato bake?  Try to go out this week.

Thanks.
