Im thinking that "commercial hook" may be the ticket for taking an overhand swing at a big flattie? any thoughts on this?

Problem is half of us would probably sink the gaff into our leg, or kayak

In my conversation with Allen Bushnell, his technique for the commercial gaff is to place the gaff in the water with the point facing upward, swim the halibut over the gaff and lift... you can lift and pull the fish on board in one fluid motion.

He described how he uses the long point to hold the fish down by torquing it a bit when the fish is laying on deck.

The commercial gaff, when used this way, gives you a bit more reach to stick the fish than the conventional gaff.  I personally use the conventional gaff since that is what I'm accustomed to.  With the conventional hook, you swim the fish up to the gaff and lift straight upward.  As long as the fish is not a jumbo, you can stick it and lift the fish out of the water in one fluid motion in order to get your game clip on it, and then give it the "wood shampoo".

A few other guys have the commercial gaff and hopefully they'll chime in with some real world experience.

Here's my super cool EK gaff  :smt007

fyi: I'm still learning to use my gaff...Bushnell has seen me handle a gaff  :smt011 and I NEED a lot of practice....think I'm getting better as the gophers in our backyard are slowly thinning out :smt002

I prefer the slap gaff / commercial gaff a lot better coz I can take a better swing with it...

Thanks Eric!  I might switch over to a conventional gaff for flatties......I resorted to the occasional overhand swing lately this summer with some bigger fish, and I sorta scared myself...Still put me in the slap gaff collumn for now haha

On the contrary, I took almost a half hour - I know, pitiful.  Couldn't decide on the color of the grip and wasn't sure if I wanted my handle or my first name.  I kept going back and forth. :smt009

Haven't gotten it bloody yet, but it is raring to go!  BTW, I love mine! :smt007

Yep... choose the "pick-up" option when checking out.

Mines a beauty. I recently proved it floats (Fort Ross wayward kayak).

Rumor has it my new KZ Custom "Acid Wrap"  (should be called "mind warp") fishing rod is ready for it's unveiling....Can't wait to see it and FISH with it!      Erik's works are more like functional art..
