After last Sunday I felt in need of redemption.

12 kayakers out there at the sailing buoy in SC, live bait popping inside, and halibut on the bite.

I had 2 or 3 chances and missed each one.

All in a day, all in a day.

But it gnawed on me, so I went out to the same spot (approximately) today.  Got 7 brown and copper rockfish, then had "the hookup."

I was using my light lamiglass with the little red abu on it, maybe 12 pound test.  My big reel had malfunctioned.  (Braid got caught in between spool and side plate, buried. No free spool...retired it for the day)

No feeding required this morning, like Alex's fish on Monterey, the rod went bendo like on a snag, and the fish was on-on-on.

Great runs for the 1st 5 minutes, then she sttled down for a gradual pull-up. fisht took around 10 minutes total. Long time.

Also forgot my stringer today DOH.  I gaffed and ran a keeper cord from the gills out the mouth to secure, praying the fish would not go crazy on my lap.

All went well.

What no pics?

Well. I had a couple, but met a new kayak fisher out there.  Gave her my rockfish, showed her my butt, and asked if she'd snap a pic.

Hand-off my camera......"you got it?"  "yeah"  Splash!

Olympus 770 off Blacks Point 43 FOW.

She was so sweet offered to replace the camera.  We'll work something out.

Bayside took a pic, hope to get it later today for posting.

19.25 pounds on Bayside scale 2hrs after catch.

allen you're the hali killer this year, what is that, the 3rd or 4th huge one you've got?

oh an a tip on those cameras

cut approximately 1-2" section of pool noodle.  bore a hole out of the middle of it.  run your camera strap through the pool noodle and back over the camera.  super cheap and very useful camera float!  if it drops it will float.  make sure to test it in a bucket or a sink before hitting the blue though.  much cheaper than the $15 floating camera straps they sell.

I used a piece of black pipe insulation since i use that a lot for my rigging.  worked great for me and i test it pretty much every trip by dunking my camera on purpose.

Congrats on the fish Allen.  Look forward to the pics.

Sorry to hear about the camera.  No flotation attached to it?

Even if you had a gps way point for a diver to retrieve the water would probably have penetrated from being under for too long.

Great story, I went out with the family after lunch today, nothing for me. But a guy in an orange yak, brought in two flattie,s about 250 yards off the Harbor mouth that look like keepers. Lots of bait.

Damn Allen, When I catch the small halibut they go nutso. You catch the big ones and they lay there for you. Awesome. I know the fish was a 10. How was the chick? I will wait for the AOTY shots. :smt006
