Well, I headed out at 4:30 am to hit the beach for some striper action and finally got into them.

Using the good ol' fishing in a wetsuit trick, I worked the edge of this deep hole casting off a sandbar parallel to shore while ducking under some of the larger waves crossing up on this sandbar. (I was standing in waste deep water and some of the waves were over my head) Nothing like getting tubed while holding your rod reeling trying to maintain the action on the popper. :smt005

Hooked into a fish about an hour into fishing, and had a good battle trying to land the guy in strong current and dumping shore break.  I've never landed a fish that big in conditions like that, but it got done with out a hitch.  Now cheeks hurting from my permagrin, I bled, gilled and gutted the fish and continued the routine.  About a half hour later, my popper got blasted out of the water by a big fish about 10 feet from me, but nothing stuck. (very cool)

Another half hour of ducking waves and casting, I came up from under what was the first wave of a larger set still reeling, and bam! I was on with another smaller but nice fish.  This guy was pissed and started doing steelhead like backflips 3 feet out of the water.  Before I knew it the next wave was on me and as I tried to jump this one I got caught in the lip and pushed back off my feet.  The fish came out of the water again, and it was off.   :smt012

Anyway, very stoked.  First striper of the year for me and PB (~15lb). :smt001

Sounds like some pretty exciting fishing! Stoked for you on your first surf Striper. I've only ever caught them in the bay.

good job. I seen a fisherman at Del Monte Beach doing the same technique wadding in the water neck high casting into the surf.

Nice picture.

Thanks guys.

Surf reel is fine.  Greased and oiled, she's been around that block a few times.

who says fishing isnt a full contact sport, thanks for the great report, cameron

:smt005  I was telling one of the guys on the beach that it was like dodging line backers while casting. Lots of fun.
