I've never peddled...  So I don't like it.   :smt002

It's a matter of pride for a lot of us stubborn types.  I've never done it and am doing fine with what I've got, so I really don't have much interest in peddling.  That said, I didn't have interest in getting a fishfinder for about 10 years and that's now changed...

Some day I'll peddle.  Maybe when I'm old and my body hurts more than it does now.   :smt001

Only because I fall victim to it WAY to often -

pedal: a foot-operated level or control for a vehicle, musical instrument, or other mechanism

peddle: try to sell (something, esp. small goods) by going from house to house or place to place.

Sorry Ab, couldnt resist :smt001

He is right ( :smt002 ) of course.  Paddles are so simple yet elegant, plus I fish the kelp all the time.

From what I've been told, the biggest disadvantage of the Hobbie Mirage (besides the price) is the problem of pedaling through kelp. You can pull the drive unit and paddle thru, but we've all heard the Outback paddles like a tub. How about you Revolution guys out there. Do you have the best of both world with pedaling and paddling?

The Outback isn't really known for it's paddling. But I've tried the Revo and it's nice paddler, the Adventure is really nice. But give it a try and find out for yourself. BTW w/ the new way the MD is secured you can pop it in and out in a sec.

The Hobie seems to be a delta fishing machine, wind and current are his friends!! I was fishing with Hobie Blue he would get 5 casts to my one because of a small current. I would cast and then back paddle to my original spot, and he would slowly peddle and fire off cast after cast. I haven't paddled a Hobie just my observations!!!

I choose to paddle because it's a great way to get an upper body workout.

Paddling is lovely. Pedals rock. Sometimes other way around. Advantages and disadvantages to both. Fishing with the hobie, it's nice to have the rod in your hand and zoom zoom with the pedals.  Some disadvantages that come to mind would be extra gearing, extra cost, extra weight.  TRy both

They both have their advantages but..... After owning a couple paddle yaks, ocean kayak & cobra, my next yak will be a hobie. The handsfree advantages the hobie brings against wind & current are overwhelming. I'll get my upper body work-out in the gym. I like Abking's "maybe someday I'll peddle when I'm old". That's what I used to say about fishing. Oh, wait a minute, I am old now. :smt005 jim

I am in the process of buying a new kayak and fairly new to kayak fishing.  I have been out 3 trips, each time my buddy let me use his Ocean Kayak. Paddling and fishing in the ocean just wore me out and I go the gym regularly doing both weights and cardio.  I am aiming for a Hobie.

Dory, You would be surprised at the resale value of a Hobie ..that is if you ever wanted to sell it! As far as kelp I have been in the thick of it many times and have only removed the drive once. Just push one pedal forward to flatten out the fins and paddle through...it's no big deal. The Revolution (an easy paddler as well) is my choice for now but an Adventure is in my future.

Yeah I threw in the bicycle part because it's Tour de France and I am a hard core roadie from long back and the endless Shimano vs SRAM vs Campy debates  and the Italian vs Trek vs Specialized debates is in all the bike forums and is similar. It's a personal fit in the end. Try both--they have their strengths and weaknesses both.

I have been on trips where both excelled, one or the other did, and neither did--in catch in performance, etc.. The Inuits got along with paddles for centuries but then they used skin boats with closed decks and rolled to survive. Technology has something to offer some of us and I am glad it widens the appeal of kayak fishing--the more the merrier.

Me, I'll just keep paddling the traditional way having come from sea kayaking.

Now let's start a thread to argue about "Anglo" paddles versus traditional Inuit/Greenland paddles  (queue Rickey Mitchell) :smt003
