Welcome to the board, and thanks for the report.

Whether some of us are "touchy" or "informed fisherman" we're definitely opinionated...but don't let any of us discourage you from posting here! Whether we agree with keeping the shark or not, the fact is that it was a legal catch and you have every right to do with it as you see fit. Glad to see it was eaten and enjoyed.

BTW - it looks much larger in your pics than in the original pic posted here. If I had seen your pic first I probably wouldn't have even said anything about its size.

Whaling used to be legal, and so did SCUBA diving for abs, and look where that got us. Not to argue, but just that something is legal doesn't mean it should be.

I hear ya, M2....and I totally agree. I'd just hate to chase away a new member because they feel we are trying to shove our beliefs down their throat (which nobody in this thread was really doing).

And just because we have opinions doesn't mean we're right.  It's starting to feel a bit preachy around here.

Nice catch bapakdanlaki!!

I'm glad people share their opinions on this site, and if the opinion is way off base it will get its due attention.  I don't at all feel its too preachy here at NCKA.  This very issue of keeping/releasing baby threshers and makos has been around as long as kayak fishing and/or kayak websites.  bapakdanlaki welcome to the website, you were totally within your right to keep the thresher, this is obviously an issue I feel strongly about and I wish CDFG would actually put size limits on sharks based on their growth/maturity and fecundity.

WTG man on that thresher!  I've never fought a fish like that, ever!  Great recount of the fight too!  Sounds like quite a feat to me!   :smt002

I'm glad too.  And I respect the opinions.  But come on.  It's a post about a nice catch.  Let's start a "don't keep baby sharks" thread.

I, like Bluefin17, feel strongly that sharks should be managed differently and personally won't keep sharks. As Bluefin said, it is with in one's right to keep a full size or baby thresher. They do taste good on the BBQ if prepared correctly ie: bled, iced...etc.  I just wish there were more of them out there cruising our waters.

WTG! Great catch.  I am a shark protector as well, and I think it's just fine to keep a small thresher one in a while, especially if it's your 1st one.  It is very rare they are in so close in Monterey Bay, so the occasional retention poses no danger to the species IMO.

I also agree that fish looks way biger than 30 lbs!

Nice catch bapakdanlaki thanks for the intel.

I am guessing that over half the guys here would have kept the shark.  Of those that would not, some are the educated biologist types and the rest are wussies like me that dont want to have a shark lap dance.  :smt003

Nice catch! I've never caught a thresher either and judging by the picture you posted I probably would have kept it too since it would be my first one ever. In fact, a few threshers have been posted here in the past and one was even the winning fish at an NCKA fishing tournament at Coyote Point a couple years ago.

When you look back at those pics and the posts that follow up you can see two things: It is unlikely that any of those other fish were sexually mature, and there wasn't any controversy around the posts that followed those catches.

So, glad to have you aboard.  :smt006 And after this thread we've all got a little more information to help us make an informed decision about our next thresher, whatever that decision may be.

dude how awesome would it be to have to make that decision!

Good job on the T-shark.  I love 'em, so tasty, greek swordfish.  I've seen T's doing acrobatics out of new brighton before, so its cool that you bagged one.

Nice catch bapakdanlaki!

For the record, I'd have kept it and eaten it just the same.

It does look bigger than 30 lbs... way to go.

Nice catch!

If these species are not endangered, I don't see a problem with keeping one of these.

Signed.

And that fish looks significantly bigger than 30 lbs.  Are you sure the scale wasn't in kilograms?
