Way to go Joel!!!
Nice octopus shot. Thanks for posting those pics!

Thanks....forgot to mention a cool "moment"....when I got the octopus on board the yak....it was laying on the foot well of my prowler and he turned yellow right away - as you can see on the photo, his bottom matches my yak.....very cool camo display....reminds of my buddy Lee...he's white when he's sober and turns red when he's had a few coronas or some hot sake  :party

Mr. Mooch is a class act, indeed!!

Joel, you were a great help out there with all the newbies, ready to lend a hand at any moment.  I hope next year will find us teaching that class together.

But, most of all, you demonstrated how it can be done!  You should have seen their eyes buggin' when Joel pulled up that flatty!

As soon as we got out there and dropped, I saw him working a nice fish and was teasing him a bit.  Then he yells "Damn! it's a halibut, Allen!"

I had just hooked up a rockfish, so I handed off my rod to one of the students.  She says "what do I do with two rods?"  I say "whichever one has a fish....pull it in." then sprint over to help Joel.

By the time I got there, he's got it netted and in the air.  "do you think it's legal?"

"Looks plenty legal to me"

And to top it all off, Joel shared all that fish with everyone in the class.  Truly a gentlman.

That same girl says, after I got the halibut filleted and cut into steaks
"Now it looks like fish to me."  She's pretty funny, I think she's going to keep on kayak fishing.  She'll probably be on this board soon.

Average was about 1/2 limits, not bad for 6 newbies in October.

I'm back out there next Sunday at the crack.  Santa Cruz/town is slow, and the North Coast is Great White country right now.....18 footer sighted a week ago Thursday off Davenport, nosing around the drift chute on a PB, another sighted in the area a week before, and of course they are present in force at Ano right now, according to PSRF.

Thanks again Joel, for  helping to make it a great day on the water!

Allen

Hey Gato-

The clinic was through Monterey Bay Kayaks, where they advertise and book  the group.  We tried the first few at the end of the summer and they were so successful, we added two more.

Sadly, the last scheduled clinic was this past Sunday.  Weather willl be coming soon, and I really expected the good fishing to fall off.  I'm actually surprised at how good the fishing still is right in that little corner there at Delmonte Beach.  Easy paddle and willing fish.

Wouldn't it be cool if it was always like that?

Im did fish that area in February two years ago and caught a legal-sized ling, though it was out of season and had to go back.  So I think it's always somewhat fishy there.

Keep posting here, and hook up with the guys for outings.  I know I'll be fishing down there more often for sure, and I always like company.

Allen, you probably know better than I do, but aren't the octopi protected in Monterey Bay (invertebrates)?
Another place to launch from and park for free is just north at the laundromat. Limited time on the few spaces right next to the beach (2 hours?), but you can set up, then park across Del Monte Blvd. Also a bit further north in the housing area. About the same walk to the water as the pay parking, I think.
Only someone as modest as The Artist Formerly Known as Hana Pa can pull in a 15# 'but and say, "is it legal?" Good job Mooch!

Hey Allen, when I drove back on Hwy one that same day, I remembered you mentioning about the white shark activity at Ano Nuevo.....it still puzzles me that there are so many surfers & kite surfers at waddel creek - which in itself, a pretty close proximity to Ano Nuevo - yet you never seem to hear of any shark attacks, encounters or even sightings in that particular beach :smt017

hey, hey I know that area well. fished there A lot, because it was right out in front of my house :smt002 . Halibut well start to fall off as soon as the swell start to pick up and the visibility goes down. but there are still a few reefs that will produce rock fish. the fish generally are on the small side, but fun no less. Now if you want to talk about going off point pinos, as long is the swell and wind are manageable_well let's jut say a lot of fun days and nice fish :smt003

There have been quite a few sightings at waddell over the years. I have seen some film/video where a huge shark is in the wave following a surfer as he surfs the wave. I think that made the news.

but typically it is surfed only in the summer on south swell or weak nw windswell. sharks get here mainly at the end of the summer (although erik larsen got his 400+ stitches @ davenport landing in july of 91).
likewise windsurfers are mainly there in spring and summer.

right as the sharks get here in force, the surfers and windsurfers are largely going to different spots.

It also seems most sightings are during low swell and clear water.

man, all this talk has me surfing and fishing in town for a bit. sigh.
