Rapala CD 14 sardine or blue and white mac. In shallow water use the CD-11 for halis. Set back at least 100 ft for max depth.

Use a rapala if you want to lose $8-$12 when it gets snagged, I like using $1 renegade crankbaits on sale at Walmart

Quote
what is "sabiki

Sakibi is a Japanese word meaning something like "little bait fish rig" or "to catch little bait fish." There is a multi-million dollar industry in Sabiki fishing. It is catching on all over the US. Basically, you catch little bait fish and then use them for catching bigger fish. Some folks are so rabid about Sabiki fishing that they don't even bother with the big fish and just catch bait - they even have tournaments just for the Sabiki. I'll have to admit it is a blast after you get used to how it works, since the Sabiki has up to eight surgically sharp bait hooks that can grab you pretty bad if you're not attentive. No hook ever invented is this sharp. A pack costs about four dollars.

That's why a sabiki stick/rod is a great idea. I almost always roll with my sabiki stick and am always watching for birds (indicating live bait schools near the surface). All those little hooks can drive you crazy, especially snagging on your back while sitting in the kayak, or everything else for that matter :smt011! Talk about one of my pet peeves! A sabiki rod is an inner flow rod (tube) which houses the sabiki jig. OK, OK I know I'm contributing to the thread jack, just trying to help a fellow fisherman out. :smt003

if you fish santa cruz with a lighter swimbait (like 1 oz) with a teaser above it like a small hoochie or shrimpfly or saltwater fly, try hanging a 6 to 12 oz cannonball (start with 8) on 24" of 20lb line off a slido above your swivel and trolling that.  I have pulled up double brown rockfish when I run into a few that way, but they really like the little teaser more than the swimbait it seems.

the sabiki is the most fun, assuming you want smelt,  :smt002.
