Cool report, rockfish.  Way to get Mama out for your b-day OTW.   :smt001

If a seal approaches me I'll do my best to scare it with very threatening movements and a deep guttoral growl.  If it comes within reach I'll do my best to hit it with something.  Wild animals shouldn't be learning that they can approach people unless that is what is intended by the people!  IMO...   :smt002

And as far as running from a shark, that's like saying a pan-handler is running from the cops.  That little punk seal with paint on its head won't know what hit it when a shark gets it.   :smt005

When dolphins come near me I welcome it, but they're not seals...

Didn't they legalize hitting an aggressive sea lion with non lethal weapon like a sling shot or a paintball gun?  Could that be the paint.

so when a hungry seal smells fresh fish on a silly kayaker (maybe others have fed her in the past?) its time to pester for a safe and easy lunch

rock, glad you guys had a good trip and that SWS is still putting out.  I recall getting robbed by furbags at SWS even a few years ago on a day when there was tons and tons of bait in the cove and the blues, blacks, and schoolies were thick.  Pretty sure they've learned and associated yaks with food now.

I just watched a KSBW (Salinas) news story about malnourished sea lions being taken to the Marine Mammal Center (in Marin?) in record numbers.   So maybe they're hungrier this year, supposedly because their food is further out to sea because of warmer waters, and the young ones don't know to swim further out for food.
But, watching the file footage of the mammal center, i could see GREEN PAINT on the head of the seal lion they were feeding with a tube (learning that people = food).

I suspect this is the answer; seals trained to associated man with food then being released into the wild.
