Been yrs since I was down your way.  Did some logging up out of boulder Creek in the 80's Big sticks...8 ft on the butt!!! Adrenaline... :smt003 I remember taking a day off and going down to the Santa Cruz marina and renting a little boat for the day and hooking some nice lings...

I used to have 2 VHF55's.  I threw them out because they both started to be unreliable.  Last summer I lost the ability to transmit when on a multi-day up in AK.  I think it was due to water seepage on the mic.  After that I punted on them.  I was a  bit disappointed because I used to own the VHF50, the model before the 55, and it was rock solid for me for many years (like 5 years).  The 55's made it about 1.5-2 years.

Reading all the safety stuff makes me wonder how I got along all those years without radios walkie talkies flare guns gps epirbs etc

I must've been just too dull-witted to realize how important all this stuff is

After I met my wife she started ragging me about being safe and I wound up with a vhf

First time I fired it up all I could pick up was a.m. tv talk shows so I tossed it in the stow and quick carrying it

Anybody want to buy a vhf?

well my Standard Horizon HX600S-LI arrived yesterday put on the charger all nite... picked it up this morning put it together, started turning this and pushing that trying to turn it on... pushed the power on button and its starts scrolling txt "distress 16" I'm thinking damn I just sent out a "Distress" so I unplugged the battery grabbed the instruction manual and started to read.... :smt003 and realized the red button on the other side that u have to uncover is the emergency "button"...hope i never have to use it, but it...just knowing I can will be a great relief....

it says its good for -3ft for 30 mins of submersion!

I was thinking of one of these for the Wife but 6 AA batteries and no rechargeables must be heavy

Hummm... Don't wanna rain on your parade, but I doubt that Cobra will stand up to the test of time.  Hopefully it will work when you really need it.
