Launched w a friend at 6:45 to just a slight wind ripple and the whole dam lake to ourselves (as far as the eye could see). We lauched out of the East entrance tahoe keys and headed straight North. I figured we would start fishing when we could not see bottom. 1 mile later the bottom finally disapeared. trolled west towards camp Rich. big Rapalas, Jigged Gibbs 3oz(35 seconds to hit bottom), soaked bait(worms), shad raps. I had 2 strikes, (1) rapala (1) Shad rap nothing stuck though. My buddy hooked his first on a worm just off the bottom, drifting the drop off. He yelled for me to bring the net and I was trolling two lines so I could not just swing around. It took me 60 sec to get to within 20 yards of him and I watch him grab his leader and start to lift a Nice Mac about halfway out of the water and before I could yell no, w/one headshake the 6 lb leader snapped and gone. Easy 6-7 lb Mac. He was hartbroken but knew exactly what he had done wrong. We fished till 12:30 and when the first big gust hit me in the face I called it and we started to head in. Hail mary Tommy sticks a 3 lb mac as he's reeling in. Cell phone pics on the way! We fished the Keys a little bit but the wind really kicked up and off the water by 2ish. 6 1/2 hours 5 miles maybe.Great day on the Big Blue

You can do with a regular one but it's a workout. A silver-chart K-16 Kwikfish w/ a herring/sardine wrap is the ticket.

Randall,

What do Macs taste like?  The guide I went out with said he didn't care for them because they are kind of greasy.  Just wondering what your experience is.

Yep, pretty tasty. They tend to be on the oily side but if you don't like it they smoke up awseeeesome!

I would smoke them but they are hard to light! Sorry could not resist!! Doug, Being fond of Rainbows & Browns I don't care for the soft white meat of the Mac's. Tote, they are sweet but If smoked, they firm up and dry out just enough to make them delish. Just the start of the season for me and hope to get out much more now that I am not working for the slavedriver anymore. I think I feel a trip to Stampede in my bones. That lake is off the hook this time of year and I have a few honey holes just begging for a visit. Any takers?
Off to a Mona Vie meeting, later!!!

I'd love to check out stampede. I must warn you I am not a fisherman or a kayaker, yet I desperately want to be both.  My wife and I went out from Kings Beach today around to Crystal bay point and had no luck. We were using a rooster tail, and a kast master. I ran into a few people who suggested Rapala, so I might check that out soon.  Any tips on North Shore fishing?  Thanks,

Slim

I might be taking a trip up to Stampede on monday night, then fishing tuesday. Never fished there in my yak; only in the the P/B that got sold when times got tight.

Cool post, Randall - thanks for the Mack report.  I look forward to jigging a diamond bar in 200' for them in late July when I'm up there with the family.

Snap, give me a call before you go and we'll talk. if you are going to camp I would suggest taking a drive instead of launching near the dam.

Abking, Pleas make sure and let me know when you"ll be here. We gotta spend a morning on the lake. That late in the year it takes some special work. Alterior motives being I WILL be up in your neck of the woods next year and want to build points with ya. Holler when the time gets close.

Zee, thats too funny I was looking at all my Sac river Salmon gear the day before thinking a big Flat fish would pobably do the job. Hope MaMa and the Papoose are doing fine!

Nice report. Looks like you guys had a pretty good time. I've been wondering how the fishing has been in that area. I've never fished Stampede though last year I fished Jackson Meadows, Boca, and Donner lake. I plan to be back at Jackson Meadows mid July. I'll post again when the trip nears. Maybe you have some tips or honey holes you'd be willing to share. Anyways, thanks again for the report

Bear, Give me a shout when it gets near. I have only fished Jackson once 15 yrs ago. It is a pretty cool spot and I have always wanted to go back. Stampede is hard to drive past for me. in the last 29 yrs I"ve only missed 2 years but would love to check jackson out again.
