.

In all seriousness when I did the surf at Mariner State beach there was only one other person there and they were back up. I did it to asess my skills and the yak more than anything it wasn't illegale but it wasn't reccomended as the sign read. As for the Whale I  wasn't  thirty feet from him when it  spouted, it was like an explosion then it slap its tail . I turned tail and paddled like hell. That was my first whale sighting: I'll bond next time.

Am I giving seminars? Yes and you should come to one. Should you be looking into the seminar thing as a second career? Maybe and you could do them in Texas, Mississippi. Oklahoma and Alabama.
You find a lot of this entertaining. I find you entertaining.
This is what my crate looks like minus my rescue rope.

Why Do I paddle a kayak instead of a float tube or a pontoon boat? I like seeing where I'm going not where I've been!
Paddle safe and wrap'em tight.

Find that hard to believe, the East Coast has plenty.  Check out their websites.
jaxkayakfishing.com and there is another in Pensacola Florida.

People I talked to in Southern Ca. seemed to like them.

My opinion  is either own a Prowler or the Tarpon 160.  Both are good.

paddleandflies,

I use a rubbermaid roughtote in my prowler 13. Low profile, tight lid.
Looking at your pic of THE CRATE, I see what appears as a rolling pin? Is this correct ?
Is it used as an anchor system or what?
I bake kread and gotta know if I can mix both hobbies! :smt002 :smt006 :smt001

My 2 cents...

I have a prowler 13 with a crate. The reason I have the crate is it makes sense. And I put my pole holders in facing the wrong way so I needed to do something else. And it looks cool......Come on you all know crates are cool!!!! I tried one tied to my longboard. Didnt work too well. Fell off and I lost some gear.
The Wilderness is a nice boat, but the local store I wanted to support when purchasing my kayak didnt have them.

Now that all is said and done and I spent one full year paddling and fishing I want the Cobra!
That thing is so sturdy and apparently not too slow as Sean and Erik outpaddled the OK crew one calm day in san Pablo Bay.

Could be cooincidence.
We need to have a race!!!!! :smt001

what about the scupper pro? It's a little lighter and narrower. water line
is as long as a prowler. better for 160lb and under dudes maybe
(if there are any in this day and age?)

blue, maybe you could give some fly-fishing seminars?  :smt003.
I'd probably pay for any seminar you give, except the salmon one, that
would be way too serious for me. I need entertainment.

P&F, I think it is marinA state beach, not marinER state beach? I've seen it
pretty rough there, but also pretty darn flat. how was it when you launched?

On the crate thing, I think crates are passee. yesterday's news! wide lapels.

I'm using a cut-up playmate cooler, it fits in my tankwell, and it stows in
my foward hatch, plus it floats. studly, no?

so maybe my kayak would kind of stay on it's side, not flip all the way over?
I wonder...  better helmet too, more coverage.  foam helps impact resistance.

yeah, it's clear, crates are yesterday's news, cut-up playmate coolers are IN!

It was a fun debate on the crate., no offence taken. Do you flyfish Bluekayak?
When I do seminars I stress the surf very seriously take a class before you try it.
The Marina state beach was extremly rough the day I did it. I did because I wanted to say my greenland paddle worked in rough surf.

I just checked out the Cobra Mariner on the web very impressive looking. I have a Prowler 15 and a Scupper Pro and have surfed them both. The Scupper Pro is a little better in the surf and that is because of the rounder front end. The Scupper Pro's more keel like front end catches the water in front of the wave and takes you sideways real fast, where the Scuppe Pro allows you to steer a bit longer before that happens.

Bottom line both kayaks won't handle surf that is very large, if you don't beat the wave your getting rolled.

Looking at the Cobra I would guess it has the same issues, you may be able to get a llittle more out of it if you can sit back further and get the nose up. Anyway, who cares, I just pack my poles and stuff into the hatches and roll on into the beach. There is nothing like the view you get on a good wave as it picks you up, and you gaze at the whole beach in front of you as you get slammed.

The one test I would make of the Cobra before I would settle on it, is a stability test, by simplly turning sideways with my feet in the water. If you can do this it will be great. The reason for the test? If you can't turn in your kayak how are you going to get stuff from behind you? If you try this in a Scupper Pro you'd better be extremely careful and pay close attention because it is a delicate balancing act.

As for the Tarpon, don' know anything about it, other than I have heard some guys complain about the hatch  covers not  being that great because they fall off.

paddle and flies,

don't mean to be a bother, but, what the hell is the rolling pin for?
 Seems I can't sleep until I know!
Thanks for an answer when you can.

I liked the concept of your rolling pin, but couldn't part with the one in my kitchen. I did make something of the sort out of PVC parts with  large wooden washers to keep the line on the spool and extra fittings on the ends for grip.
I can now keep my anchor rope and my crab lines on easy to spool tool!

rigging is the mother of invention! :smt002

Hey Boxofrain,
I buy my rolling pins at Vons. I like the RP  best for jamming it down in pvc. Kind of like a drag control.
I'd like to see a pic of your set up.

paddle and flies,
I guess I should get out my manual and learn how to post pic.'s
I love seeing all the rigging ya'll do, as everyone adds a new twist to each item I would not have thought of!
As soon as I get it together I'll post 'em.
The size of the PVC fits inside my ghetto rod holder as well. (rod holder is PVC also)

Hey Boxofrain,
I think rigging is fun part of kayak fishing, it definitely adds a personal touch.
