Slower than a slug race today.

Drifted Loch Lomond shiners all around the cove and halfway to California City, all depths. No fish. For anyone. I had a good bite that result in my shiner getting bit clean in two (see below).

Was a beautiful day in a beautiful location tho; great therapy for the mind. I hope for equally stunning weather for Adams get-together.

The action on the pier picked up a hair at the bottom of the tide (2pm), with one landed and one lost, but given the number of rods out there it was still a very very slow day for them as well.

I also saw a boat with three guys fishing six lines, whose CF number is safely with Caltip. The DFG showed up later and were surverying the scene with some very powerful optics. Get 'em!  :smt071

Here are some pics.

It was great to fish with Phil and Lisa again, and equally nice to see jonesz and a few others out there. Slow doesn't even begin to describe it. I trolled herring behind a dodger and also tried live shiners. I had one tappity-tap, but no more than that. After we landed and packed up I drove over to Berkeley Pier to survey the action there and got the same story. I walked al the way to the end and saw one halibut at the very end. I also threw the net for about an hour at various spots and came up with not a single bait fish, but the crabs were out in force.

It's pretty obvious to me that we're still too early for consistent halibut fishing. But, they are showing up here and there, so if you're in the right spot at the right time you may get one.

Phil, didn't you learn to always use the stinger. I know that you know that I know you know. Looked just like last Saturday. Beautiful weather jsut no damn fish. I talked to jay on the radio when I was going over the bridge to visit my Mom in Alameda. Stopped by ARW in time to see Ariel, Jedmo, Yakattack and two other NCKAers. One fish between them. Then driving home past Berkeley I shouted out again while driving and grammar police piped up saying no fish for them either. I did get my Moms patio cleaned and mopped her kitchen for her. if there is karma for that I hope it hits at Lake Mendocino tomorrow. Craig :smt006

:smt013Went to the pier and met kneetoe at around 4pm. Saw an orange prowler on top of truck- I wonder who that was.  Tried making bait with cast net and managed two smelt.one was just perfect size. Baited my pole and went back to making more bait. I left kneetoe watching my pole while casted a ratle trap. A few minutes later I heard comotion and saw kneetoe with pole in hand fighting a fish.  I ran over thinking its my pole and said give me my pole. He said your pole is over there.  All of a sudden I realized it wasn't my bait that got hit.  So I ask around for a net assist.  We weren't planning on getting anyhting. We were just the to practice with the castnet. Someone did come to the rescue and helped with his crabnet.  28 inch fat halibut was landed. Thnx kind stranger.  Kneeto let me pose with the fish.  Further up th pier heard a big 34 incher was landed on frozen anchovis. Went for a look and that halibut was gigantic. 3 guys in a boat with 6 lines is legal... We are allowed to fish two rods  for halibut.

Unless it was 3 guys with 6 lines EACH?

Thant would be illegal.....

The fishing regs make me feel pretty stupid. I went looking specifically for that item and read one line, 3 hooks max. So there is an exception for halis?

Having grown up on the bay, I had to look this up, too. Here's the Reg:

28.65. General. Except as provided in this article, fin fish may be taken only on hook and line or
by hand. Any number of hooks and lines may be used in all ocean waters and bays except:
(a) San Francisco and San Pablo bays between the Golden Gate Bridge and the west Carquinez
Bridge, where only one line with not more than three hooks may be used.
(b) On public piers, no person shall use more than two rods and lines, two hand lines, or two
nets, traps or other appliances used to take crabs

Thanks for the report Phil. It was the same for us at the ARW Saturday. Very
slow. We worked the wall up and down numerous times with nothing to show
for except for sore shoulder blades and a sore back. My first time ever paddling
my T13. Should have used the tide on my favor. Never really mattered on the
old Hobie Outback.
