I was wondering if anyone uses/has used the GULP ALIVE! products. I was thinking about giving them a try and seeing if they actually work as good as the advertisements say. Does anyone have a preference on which Gulp ALive bait works best?I will be targeting rockfish from shore mainly. THanks

I think confidence in what you are using and presentation are more important than what you use when rockies are hungry they will hit just about anything.

I know guys that swear Gulp baits work, but for me personally, they've been no different than other plastics... just way more expensive.

I'm not sure about Berkley's claim about Gulp outfishing live bait, but it does make some sense that Gulp would be more effective than non-scented plastics.

Berkely does a good job of marketing to gullible fishermen... and I've been suckered more than a few times into trying new baits.

the fish still need to be located, then the hook, still needs to be inside the mouth for it to work best.

The camo sandworms are CRACK for perch. I have a few bags that I need to try. But I agree rockies will hit anything...(see shrimp fly w/ no scent or trailer bait)

Agree they are killers for surf perch. For rockfish I use the jerk shad with good results.

They never did anything for me until I moved down to So Cal but they do work pretty good down here.  I use swimming mullets, shrimp, jerk shad and pogeys all the time inside the bays.  I tried them a few times on Monterey Bay and caught nada.

you were using them in a place void of fish, therefore this study is void :smt044

also agree the perch love it, I like the 5" Squid for Rockies and lings, but from shore I think live Bait is going to be  better than any of the Gulp strips or other gulp baits designed to be retrieved or worked.

I really like Gulp Alive. I was on a long range trip in '05 with a Berkley rep and he was passing out samples of the then new Gulp Alive. He gave me 4 qt.s of the 4" minnow and I've been buying and using it ever since then. It's great for Perch like was said and also Rockfish/Lingcod, Strippers, and Halibut. Some times it does out fish live bait. I've got a lot of confidence in it, you can, bottom drag it, jig it, cast & retrieve it, drift it.  I've even chopped it up and used it as chum, try that with regular plastics. As much as I like Gulp Alive It's still just another tool in the tackle box and nothing works all the time. It's worked for me locally both fresh & salt, So Cal local & long range, Mexico, and Hawaii.

I see it doing well in lakes where live bait is not allowed i.e. Loch Lomond or any of the lakes that now have mussel inspections, especially the minnow/baitfish imitations with scent.

I'd always thought it might to do well at LL on some of the monster bass.  Now we'll never know. :smt013  :smt010

It's gotta work at least as well as unscented plastics...  I don't like it as much because it smells bad...

But that didn't stop me from loading up when I found them for a dollar a pack, (most of which I've given away).

They do smell bad but the jerk shad has a slimy gooey consistency much like some things you find in a sushi bar. One day fishing Big Sur last year I forgot my lunch and was really hungry and ALMOST ate one just to see how it tastes.  :smt044 All joking aside, I always have a pack with me in case I run out of squid or the usual stuff isn't working. Rigged weedless and fished in heavy kelp can be a killer and has outfished the usual stuff several times for me last year. I think a slow presentation such as dropshotting takes advantage of the gulp advantages. All that said, it is hard to justify the cost except for surf perch where you can catch dozens of fish on one bag of sand worms.

40 inch striper was caught in the Petaluma River this week on Gulp Alive. I do not know which  one it was. Only that Sean at petaluma Sport and Dive measured and weighed it for pics.
