What a great week. We got to Manchester KOA Wed night and it was raining. We rented a cabin to stay dry. It rained all day Thur so the wife and I stayed in bed and read/slept all day. Fri morning the sky was clear and so was the water. My friend and I met Davew and went diving. I could see the bottom clearly from the surface at 15'. Dave shot three nice fish and my friend got a big perch. I took a couple of abs and missed a bunch of perch. I didn't get any fish but I learned a lot and will be back.

Friday night my friends left and another showed up. We went back out with clear skies and water again. I got my third ab and tried to get some fish. The first shot the tip came off my spear and I was done. We swam around exploring and practicing diving.

Sunday we took the families to a rocky beach and helped the kids find hermit crabs and other fun stuff.

There is a big ling/ab event in Manchester May 2nd. Is anyone going?

Sounds like a great long weekend, so much like the ones our group used to do. I think my kids grew up in a tide pool. Abs and fish one day, and kids and crabs the next, doesn't get any better than that.

WTG!!

Merv,

Secure your spear tips to the shaft with 2 part epoxy or locktite.  I use epoxy.  When I want to remove the tip I heat the spear shaft a bit with a torch which softens the epoxy enough to spin it off.  I lost a number of tips before someone told me about gluing them down.

Nice diving with you guys.  Sorry about the scary paddle back to the beach.  Man, that wind came up hard.

The wind wasn't as bad Sat but it was still tough. I used my Adventure Sat and the trip was effortless while my buddy was paddling his @## off. I went with a different guy Sat.

Great report, A little plumbers tape works good two on the threads and you will be able to get the tip off the shaft without a torch.  I got mine stuck in a coral head once and would have lost the shaft.

I will be at the tournament, We are arriving on the 28th hope to dive a little on the 29 30 and 1st. This will be my first year with a yak where did you launch from? It looks like there are about three places in the area.

It's no secret that Van Damme is an abalone factory, and an easy launch.  The cove we were in to the south is not even sporting in terms of abundance.  They're pretty thick.  Of course the season is closed in july, but if you need some company sticking fish, i'm almost always ready.  I'll be at Albion too, but not camping.

Hey Merv, did you dive that same spot on Sat?

Dave

Van Damme is an easy launch I have put in there a couple of times (the tunnel is cool.) I was thinking he was talking about a launch site closer to Manchester. There is the harbor at Point Aerena and Elk, Navarro are there any others I am missing in this area?

Yeah Dave we went back to the same spot. It was beautiful the second day too. I didn't get to dive as long because my partner (not bill, someone else) got cold. I want to get back up there and dive closer to the opening where the water is deeper. Did you go to the bottom of the submerged rock inside the north opening? I think it was around 30 feet there. I want to check that out next time.

Fishsticker, We stay at Manchester when I bring the family because the place is so nice. I drive to wherever we fish or dive and the family plays at the campground. I intend to come up for the weekend of the 2nd and will be camping out of my truck up and down the coast depending on the dive spot. I hope I get a chance to dive with you.

Thats too bad about the spear tip but you did get abalone.  Not all bad.  I was wondering if locktite would work for spear tips?  I like the hot glue suggestion but it also seems like it would be a hassle if you needed to switch tips on the beach.  Thanks for the report, it brings up stuff to think about for the future while diving.  JTF

Yeah there are, most need wheels. But you got the easy ones.
