Quickfish and Flatfish don't technically "dive". They are wide wobblers and need to be fished SLOW or they run out of true. You won't hang bottom too much with one if you keep the leader to your weight around 3-feet. You could also get fancy and do a sardine wrap.

FYI - Walmart in the SAC area has Apex's half price. Too bad I don't salmon fish.

Tight lines!

looks like the salmon are coming back in 2010. so don't throw away your pro-troll sting-kings or apexes just yet.

Anyone who trolls for rockfish is nuts, in my opinion.  They are the kind of people who might just kayak anyway even if there were no fish to catch. Which, I admit, is the way it often seems in Santa Cruz.  But just in case I ever try it, where does the 80 lb test go - is it the leader to the 3-way? Not that I'd know for sure, but wouldn't the most abrasion be on either the dropper to the ball or the line back to the lure?
I'd think price of the lure would be more of an important factor in trolling in the areas you'd likely attract rockfish, but next most important might be rattling and wobbling and light reflecting.  And maybe something that would float off the grassy bottom while you're unsnagging the lead ball,  But the weights you're willing to drag around  and bring up with a good-sized Olive are probably not going to hit bottom all that often anyway, even with braid (which would seem like a good choice to cut through the kelp).

I put the 80lb between the weight and some 15lb.. all the abrasion happens right by the weight, not up by the threeway. you only need 10" of 80' or so to get a weight that does not get abraded off even after a few trips.

yep tom, your choice of a cheap floating plug is the obvious, but I would like to lower the cost and eliminate the trebles which means a single hook in some plastic (I think).

maybe a rattle pushed into a senko like you have for bass fishing would be good? It should sink slowly while you are unsnagging the ball, but maybe the cheap floating (and rattling?) plug with 2 trebles seems to be the best choice tho.

I ordered some of those cork things from Cabelas, but they only had them in black, I'll see how they work, maybe put a little light colored glitter on them.  It's coming back to me bit by bit that I've trolled for rockies, so maybe it's not so nuts after all.   Just abnormal.
I had a medium hali on a Cabela's Fisherman Series Walleye Runner, but he bent the cheap hook and got off.  I replaced the trailing treble with better ones, and once had one with a large single siwash that lasted many trips and was just as effective.  Haven't seen those Walleye Runners cheap or at all recently, but did buy some cheap floating diving minnows that had better hooks.
One hard part of trolling is going slow enough so the whole rig and line doesn't start lifting to mid-water, then you can't keep the 20 inch Olives off the hook.
I hardly ever net fish, I use lip grippers or gaff, but even so, trebles can be trouble.   It's helped a lot since I started wearing "Subcontractor" gloves from Home Depot.  I'd retire the net with my other salmon-fishing museum pieces of gear if it weren't required to carry one.
Just think, if salmon season was open, we'd all have been whining about the wind for the last two weeks.  And it gives me time to get my taxes done. Looking at the bright side of things can be sooooo painful!

A corky would help keep it floating.

Those april salmon moss landing salmon searches were pretty brutal...

fun... but brutal.

I'm not so sure I miss them...

Now july pacifica, limits in 20 minutes.. that sounds like something worth missing.

For three-way trolling, I guess I will go with a shallow floating plug but maybe try a single hook in a soft plastic lure again..

maybe break out some other lures for entertainment again.

thanks for the suggestions!

every year when we watch the TdF time trial my wife says, "Remember that time you got that limit and were back before the TT started? Boy that salmon was yummy that night."
this is usually followed by, "when is it going to be like that again?"...

The fishing or the time trial?  Who would have bet Lance would be back before the salmon?
