sorry about the misunderstanding. Dive 180 feet? nope i like my eyes in my eye sockets and stomach where it belongs. I was just sayng that you can spearfish year round and thats what i am using the yak for, a dive platform.

At 6 to 7 feet at 9 seconds with those wind waves is still a very rough dangerous ocean. Look at the distance between waves, 9 seconds, add wind waves inbetween the swells and on top of the swells and you are in a washing machine ocean.
You might be ok in a very sheltered spot but there cant be any vis.

Todays visibility at Salt Point in Gerstle Cove 6 feet at low tide so the vis will improve when the flood comes up. Springtime will offer some of the best visibility with cold water.

OK, so now you're back to the "death wish" type talk?...  Dude, step off the rollercoaster and realize that some of us have spent enough time along the shoreline to know where we can enter the water under different types of conditions.  10-15 knots and 6-7' swell is a relatively calm day up here.  You'll see...

Well it looks like 20mph winds and a 9-12ft swell for the sonoma coast. i'm gonna bail and save my WAF points for a better weekend.  good luck to those who get out for the opener.

I know some places offer more shelter and are okay to dive in bigger swells, but I won't make the drive north for anything bigger than 5 ft swells...it's those 2-4 ft days that I live for.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

This is a great webcam, if you got white water its way to rough to dive or take out a boat.
I always check the Noaa bouy and then this webcam before heading over the hill.

I'm getting wet in the AM at Fort Ross...Thanks for posting up Jack, now I'll just head back south instead of going to the OC to check on your kitchen set up. :smt007

The craziness has begun!

Abalone season opens; friend pulls diver from ocean

THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

A 60-year-old Folsom resident was rescued from the water on the Sonoma Coast on Wednesday, the first day of the spring abalone-diving season.

Monty Muller suffered an unspecified medical emergency while diving for abalone at Stillwater Cove at about 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department.

A friend Muller was diving with was able to get him to shore, and the sheriff's helicopter landed on the beach eight minutes later.

Muller was loaded into the helicopter and transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, sheriff's officials said.
