I just purchased a Rack-It brand lumber rack and am needing some advice on what type of kayak carrier I can get that can go right on the lumber rack.  I don't need the whole rack system and don't what the Yakima rail system.  I really just want the saddles that I can bolt to the lumber rack.  I would appreciate any advice and suggestions anyone may have.

Thank you,
Matt

I have a f.150 ford with a lumber rack and I just flip the kayaks upside down and strap them down good
so what i'm saying is you don't need the saddles save your money

Yakima Land shark saddles work great. You get a set of four brand new for $60, I've seen em for really low on craigslist.

Buy a set of 8 stainless steel U-bolts, 8 cross plates for the u-bolts, & washers-nuts preferably the ones with nylon lock nuts from Home Depot. Buy the U-bolts that are the same diameter as your lumber rack.

Tighten to the point that you can still swing em down incase you have to carry plywood.

Or transport the yak upside down like Duane said to save money.

Yuppp, some roll bar foam will help protect the yak and help keep it secured down as well.

Duane is right...the rest of the lumber rack set do exactly that. I have carried three yaks on my lumber rack.........(Wow, that sounded totally Dr. Zeuss)

Thanks for all the insite into transporting my kayak the only problem I can see is if I want to carry more than one the rack alone is not wide enough for two big game anglers,"mine and the wifes" and I will need a carrier of some sort to hold them on edge.
Thanks again

We bought the Malone Autoloader "J" style carriers for our Jeep since our rack was 1.5" round bar, worked great, you can also expand the carriers and incorporate an autoloader made by malone as well.  You can pick up the autoloaders for 100 bux or less.

For me, less is more. I have a similar lumber rack on my truck.I just place the bow up on the rear crossbar, then walk around to the rear and slide the yak forward. I don't flip the boat upside down, I just tie it in place with ropes that pass through the scuppers. I did place a little 18" section of spare PVC pipe around the crossbar to serve as a roller, which makes sliding boats forward easier. It is larger than the crossbar diameter, and just spins freely.

Now, you may wish to pamper your boats more than I do. Thats fine, but I think plastic boats are pretty rugged, and I don't fret about it much. Fiberglass boats would get me thinking of some sort of cradle or purpose built rollers.

I'm able to get two boats side by side by moving one outward a bit...there's a groove in the hull of the Tarpon 140 that will rest securely on the rack, and it seems really solid there. Maybe experiment a bit with your boats and see if that works for you.

I have a standard lumber rack on my Chevy and regularly carry a trident 15 and 13.  We turn the 15 upside down and the 13 right side up.  The 13 is somewhat on edge but held in by the rack.  Each boat is tied down individually.  Rock solid, no problems.

I have had 3 kayaks, the t15, t13 and a prowler 13 on the rack once.  Just a bit more pushing and sliding, but again tie each boat seperately and you are good to go.

Thanks for all of the great ideas,I just need to not worry so much about hauling my kayak and just load it up and go fishing instead of just talking about it
