Just to save futher harassment by the enviros, I wouldn't be posting about a massive canary rockfish kill. I think of alot of fishing posts are looked at by people who want to eliminate ocean fishing altogether.

OK fair enough.

Biggest rockfish, I'm with the 50' - 70' crowd all the way.  Biggest Ling had it at 85' - 95'.  But, but, but I've had my 2nd, 3rd & 4th biggest Lings in the 50' or less range.  One was in 20' & several have been @ the surface in the kelp.

And I personally, with mine own 2 eyes, say a guy pokepole a legal Ling off the rocks once, straight out of the surf!

I shot a 21" blue in about 15 feet of water a few years ago with a polespear. Thats a record but i couldnt find any place to weight it in. Oh Well. The biggest ling i polespeared was around 33 to 36" i get a few of these every year out of the ft Bragg area.

On Rod and Reel, well i have been fishing the ocean since i was a kid in the early 70's and 20 to 30lb lings where a every year thing with 15lbers common. 8lb reds and big baccicos where common to. And this was out of santa Cruz at the first bouy. Except for the baccico that was on the party boat. I hooked on huge ling at the first bouy in the 70's that as a very stong 15 year old i couldnt get more then halfway to the boat before it went to the bottom, for 15 minutes before it broke my stainless steel 6/0 hook in half.   Of course those where the days of walking through cherry and apricot ochards on the way to school in San Jose.

 - In '07, I caught a 25 inch Vermilion and a 35 inch Ling Cod in 40-50 FOW @ Bean Hollow off the yak.

The biggest Ling I've ever seen was caught by one of our own (kayak fisherman) was at HMB - caught between 30 to 40 FOW.
