6'c is 43'F, is that what it was in san pablo bay?  I thought it was 47...

I bet a neoprene wetsuit is somewhere in between, it depends on how well it seals and prevents cold water coming inside when you move.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.

I can't find anything on waders specifically but I am guessing if you got water in them you are looking at the light clothing numbers.

I bet waders are a little better than light clothing-- as long as they are dry, and not full of cold water.
When I used to be a flyfishing nutcase in the rivers of wyoming (with the water around 40-45) i always had to wear fleece pants (my "ELmo skin" pants) under to keep from getting too cold.

I just got my copy of the Kayak Fisherman magazine = Winter 2004/05

Besides Erik's article on "Fishing for Dinosaurs"  :smt023 , there was article on cold water wear - and the writer had mentioned "waders"......

Quote
"One thing we often hear is that waders full of water will pull you to the bottom. It isn't true. A fewyears back ESPN2 did a piece on waders. They had a gent hop in the water with all types of waders. He floated with the waders full of water. That's because the specific gravity of water, whether inside or outside the waders, is exactly the same. The laws of physics don't change because the water's inside the waders. Waders full of water make it extrmely difficult to get out of the water and back into the kayak. Our goal and the function of anything we wear is to keep the water out. I would not wear waders without a proper top, and you shouldn't either. To do so is at the very least is asking to get wet and it can be disastrous. Don't wear waders in a kayak without a proper top that will keep the water out!

...and he goes on.....but he never mentioned about the "proper top". I can only assume that wearing a splash top would help.

Either way, (IMO) I think wearing waders in the Bay or Lakes can be safe (when conditions are cold). But I would still stick to my wetsuit in the ocean - especially when I'm paddling miles away.  :smt002

Anyway - I think the magazine is pretty informative. But, unfortunately there are not too many Northern California articles (besides Erik's article) It seems like it's focused more on the Southern California fishing. Let's change that and start sending our own articles.....

My suggestions on topics:
Kayak Fishing for Dino's in the Bay and drinking Beer at Buck's  :party
Kayak Fishing the Bay Area sloughs...looking for Dino's
Getting Stuck in knee High mud - Bay kayak fishing at it's worst
Kayak Launching and Landing - Norcal style  :surf
Sharing the waters with Great Whites  :shark
Kayak spear fishing  :smt063
kayak ab diving  :snorkel
Kayak poke poling
Kayak Crabbing

Hey Bill,

If you look at the seas down south.  What they think is "Hairy" is a calm day for us.

At Linda Mar (I know you missed it) but 5 to 6 footers were nice.  7 to 8 ft. was when I thought we were insane.

Plus, the conditions we have had durning Sturgeon fishing.  I think most guys down south would give up in a heart beat.

I would like to be in my wetsuit in the SF Bay or San Luis Res. or Forebay(wind comes up quick) then in a pair of waders.  When the current or wind picks-up and you get separted from your Yak.  I think I would like to deal with conditions you my wet suit and not a pair of waders.
