Another rod to consider: Shimano Trevala :smt002 - About 20 /30 bucks cheaper than the Baidarka :smt002
What the heck does Mooch know about Baidarkas?....He doesn't even fish anymore. :smt044

That fact that the Baidarka floats is huge.  No more need for rod leashes.

They'll float with a reel and a decent size leadhead?
Yup... I tested it in a swimming pool with my heaviest reel and the rod didn't even bob.  It just laid flat on the surface which made me a believer.

Like ChuckE i also own a Trevala (an MH paired with my avet sx). While i love my Trevala to death (its the rod/reel that landed my avatar pick) the baidarka is now my favorite (its currently paired with a Daiwa Luna 400).  I'm sticking with the Trevala as my hallie (and salmon if we ever get to fish for them again) trolling rod, but i'll likely use the Baidarka for everything else.
It floats with my Luna and an 8oz jig (verified accidentally)

Bottom line- its just a joy to use.

I suspect that another one is in my future-- heavier this time, paired with an Avet MX....

The ratings seem a little whacky because the 701 is a glass/graphite hybrid and doesn't really compare with the 760 series.  I have 2 701s and have caught a huge assortment of stuff with them and they are great.  They are my live bait go to rods in Baja.

Wow. I haven't lost a rod yet but that feature alone makes me want it.

There's alot of other quality rods out there, don't pigeon hole yourself into one or two models cause thats what everyone else uses.  Take your budget, intended use, the reel you wanna match it up to, the line size and type you will use and your style of fishing then go to a quality tackle shop and look at your options.  Personally, I chhose rods based on the feel/action of the blank rather than the cool kayaker in the fat foam handle :smt002

And so do I.  I could care less about the lazer etched kayaker in the foam handle.  I grin everytime I see it.  The feel and action is what I look for first.  Function, value, and quality are considerations too.  I know guys that like to bragg about their more expensive, prestigous brand name rods (ie: Seeker, Lamiglass, GLoomis... whatever).... not me.  If they somehow feel better about spending more twice as much than I do on tackle, then can knock themselves out.  They just better hope they don't drop their unleashed rod overboard because I won't have much symphaty.  :smt005

I currently have my Baidarka 701M ($99) matched up with a Daiwa Sealine SL-X20SHA ($119... $99 on sale) and I've never been happier with an all-around combo for around $200.  I feel like I'm getting major bang for my buck.

The $5 upgraded carbon drag washers (per Alan Tani) is a must!

Relax boys.....the comment on the fat handle and little kayaker was a joke, did you not see the smilie:smt002  should I have used this one  :smt003 or this one? :smt001

My other comments remain though, look at all the factors then make the decision.  If in the end its still a badairka or trevala thats cool, you made the right decision.

and I use inexpensive rods on my yak as well....berkeley 7'6" mh steelheading rod with a daiwa linecounter (the cheap one) roughly $90 for the combo for light live bait and jigging rockies. And a fenwick 270 with a penn 501 or newell 229, around 200 when I bought them years and years ago.  The one yak season I put on my avet left it as useful as a brick learned my lesson with that one.

I tend to go lighter as I mostly catch and release so the fight is what I am looking for. I recently purchased Baidarka is the BK-C 761ML 8-15lbs paired with an Abu 6000. Since it was new I used it at OAP last week and landed a dino (see my avatar). So this thing can be used for mostly anything. Can't wait for the hali bite! I also have a Trevala TVC70ML 20-50lb that I have paired with my Avet SX. I  used it for rock fish last season and some ray and shark fishing. It took care of them all with no fuss. Don't get me wrong my spinning set up is a good old $35 Ugly Stick SP1101 MH 8-20lb. So the $$$'s spent don't make the rod. But in hindsight and a garage full of Big 5 specials I should have saved all the $ I spent on the cheap-o rods and gone with 1 or 2 nicer set ups.

Hey, on that note we should do a tackle swap meet? We all got stuff that someone else may want right?

That is a GREAT idea! I know I've got a lot of old gear that I'm looking at getting rid of soon. Set it up and I'll be there!  :smt003
