Has anyone ever done this at Tahoe. I am looking to try this in late spring on the west side between Kings beach and Stateline. Also seeing that half of this lake is in Nevada. Do AOTY points still apply? I am looking for people who would be interested in putting a trip together. Thanks, Craig

craig, I was thinking about doing a 3 day trip up there in the spring.

my cousin has a small place up there that I can rent - the price is pretty reasonable and it can fit up to 7 people.  I havent worked out too many details yet.

I would think that Tahoe counts for AOTY as you can use a CA license to fish from it.  I want to try both sides of the lake - one of the better guides at the lake is Gene St Denis and he launches from Cave Rock - north of South Shore about 4 miles.  He's been getting some pretty good size macks this winter.

As for deep water trolling - its not overly difficult to do.  I have spoken to a kayak fisherman who lives up in the Tahoe area and he actually told me he prefers to topline there.

I don't really like deep water trolling as the fish tend to puff up from the deep water and are more difficult to release - plus they lose all their fight after coming up a distance.

If I fish it I want to try to jig it - a lot more fun if you ask me.

Tip - bring a minnow trap and some dog food.

BMB's got some good advice. You can troll w/ a downrigger and it gets good results. Kwikfish in the silver and greens picks up Lakers. Jigging is the easier way to go and produces as well.

Pole2 does it both ways.

Hey ... that's me.   :smt006  Those are Macks from lakes up in WA.

To be precise ... K13 sized quickfish in glow with chartreuse stripes, strip of herring (or other meat) dangling on the rear hook, slathered with crawish/anise smelly jelly, bounce balling the downrigger on the bottom 100-200 feet deep.

Similar for jigging.  Glow scampy tails, with meat trailer, slathered in scent.

Repeat after me ... glow, meat, and scent, glow, meat, and scent.

hey allen, have you ever tried to sardine wrap those kwikfish instead of putting the teaser bait on the rear hook?  I would think that would do the same thing but would not affect the action as much.

Have you ever seen a bait strip trailing on a kwikfish?  The action is oh so enticing.  It's done that way on purpose vs. wrapping it on.  There is no issue with the action being affected.

BTW, bait can be almost anything ... I've heard of herring strips, worms, squawfish strips, squid strips, kokanee belly, you name it.

AOTY points will count if the fish was caught on the CALIFORNIA side only. No out of state entries.....I don't make the rules, IjustFOLLOWthem! :smt013

If I remember correctly this was discussed a while back.
To repeat, if I remember correctly. Since a CA license works anywhere on the lake it doesn't matter from where you launch. NoCal license is good if I launch from the NV side and also if I catch a fish on the NV side.
Does it really matter if I launch 2 feet from the NV border and fish the NV side?? The lake is either OK to fish or off limits. Since it is OK to fish it doesn't matter where you launch from, it still counts.
Besides, Kings Beach is an easy launch  and almost right next to the canyon at Crystal Bay ( the NV side ).

I'd be interested in joining the group.  I'm a five month a year resident at Donner lake, thus a fair weather kay top water troller..  Like to learn the deep water cold weather tactics.
