Happy New Year NCKA,

McNears Beach Park has paved parking, restrooms, running fresh water for rinsing off gear and picnic areas w/bbq's.

But no fishing pier  :smt009.

Is this open to all; kayaks and PB's and shoreliners?

Mc Nears does have a fishing pier... it's just south of China Camp.

What are the prizes?

I modified the first message, the derby is for kayak fishing only.
As far as the pier goes it is out of commision for a few years due to a large barge taking part of it out in a past winter storm.

Prizes will be fishing gear, poles, reels etc... A couple of year passes ($75 value) to Marin County Parks and launch ramps.

So I guess no weigh Boat, C&R Option??

I am dying to get out for a dino and learn from some of our experts. The ISE preso by KZ was really great. I would love an C&R option......Any chance? Maybe two divisions?

A C&R division is an option, I really did'nt think about that to tell you the truth. We do have a 13' Boston Whaler available so let me get back to you guys on this. The only problem will be in case of a tie, tough to measure a live sturgeon acurately and there is no way I'm going to weigh a live fish that is over 60 + inches from a boat. Plus weighing big fish and releasing them can harn them I have heard ? Some more feed back would be welcomed also.

I guest the recent dino success has us all thinking were gonna catch them like trout or bluegill. If this were normal dino fishing we'd be lucky to get multiple bites in a day, not not multiple fish. A good poblem to have I guess. What about a grand prize for the biggest keeper and some of the smaller prizes if you catch and release (with a pic)? Basically, you gotta keep it to be in the running for the grand prize?

Theres no way were gonna see 5 dino's in a day...right?

I'd be in if there was a C&R option- perhaps length only?

I'll most likely be there.  Word of warning, this is a treacherous area on a kayak with super fast currents.  I fished straight out from the pier yesterday and when I pulled anchor, I was within a quarter mile of those two rocks in a matter of minutes.  The brothers, sisters, not sure, but, if your not a strong paddler, this is not a safe spot to fish.

Another thing, it says, 300' minimum to anchor near the pier, is that rule gonna be in affect that day for kayak anglers Jim?

Good advice, those are the sisters...

current is wicked- especially if you are S of the pier, further N you go less current...there is a choke point by the sisters that really gets it ripping.

if you got caught out, and couldn't make it back to the launch, you can paddle perpendicular and end up landing back at the Chapel cove launch, or worst case, loch lomond!

You definetly would not want to be separated from your kayak. Buddy up within 50yards. They fixed the bridge using barges and then took out the pier. DUH!I have been over by the brothers on a rippin' outgo and it smokes along real good. If we register at Mc Nears Park I would go up and launch at CC. Even on a fast outgo its relatively safe.Mako1 got one right next to Rat Rock.

Since no one can fish from the pier right now the 300' rule is not currently enforced by us. I'm thinking the catch and release thing can happen and would be their own class. The compettitors in that class would need to have a camera, us having a boat in the water is not out of the question either. I don't want to make the rules up as we go but I do want to be flexable so all can participate fairly and have a good time. Looking forward to all sowning and having a good time, tight lines

If catch & release is in-- then I"m there 100%!

Most of us are pretty familiar with measuring & releasing-- follows the AOTY rules - but a boat would be fantastic. SBD does that at Mendo (an event i have yet to attend...boo)

I think one of the local derbies declares the winner by a random target length.  Not sure if its predetermined or they draw the length out of a hat at the "weigh in".  If guys wanted to C&R they could get the weigh boat to measure, release and record the length.

Its not biggest fish but gives everyone a shot and allows for C&R without putting too much pressure on the fish by hanging it vertically to weigh it.

and I concur with the, lucky to stick a couple fish comment.
