I just got a NRS ultra john.  I love the flexible pannels in it, very comfortable.  It pulls in the crotch just a bit due to my short legs and long torso.  I have been wearing a pair of spandex bike shorts (without the padding in the seat, I have enough of my own) in my 7 mil dive suit, and will do the same with this one.  Like mentioned before, it is so I am not naked out in the parking lot while suiting up.

I have some polypro shirts I will wear under the wetsuit for sun protection, but go bear chested in the dive suit.  Big 5 has good deals on the polypro and spandex gear.  It is more bike oriented, but easly adapts to the dive gear.  Matt

I currently use my bike shorts (With padding) on my OB, if the weather turns, I have my spray pants & jacket to layer on.  The added padding in my bike shorts really helps on the kayak seat.  Since I've never worn a wet suit, I guess I can try my bike shorts while wearing it.  I have time to see what works.
