Sunday was wide open, no plans so I made myself a fat sandwich, loaded up some refreshments and headed out for an on-the-water picnic, suburban-style...

Those of you who have followed along or who have fished Quarry know it's a boring small lake, but I've made it my mission to make the most of it, since it's the closest water to me.

Believe it or not there is some interesting and frustrating structure there, the gnarliest of which I'm drawn to like a moth to flame, but I never found a fish there til yesterday.  I knew something had to be hiding in there, and here he/she is, a personal best smallie for me:

BTW it seems my FF is dying....  moisture got inside somehow.  Seems funny that it survived multiple crashes at BH only to fail due to dew??  Perhaps I shouldn't leave it outside on the yak.

Smallmouth are fun, especially ones pushing 17 inches! Hell, 10 inchers are fun.
What kind of ff leaked on you? I never had a problem with Humminbird, even a real old one.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

Solid Smallie!!!!

Like I said, I've caught hundreds of Bass in those ponds as a Kid, and never pulled up a smallie,

I've got to get out there with ya and see if some old structure is still out there....

Juan- it's a Eagle Cuda, don't remember the model # but it's a couple years old now.  Probably time for an upgrade anyway.

Adam-  I told you!

Andy and Don, come on out, I'd love to see more kayaks out there.

It hit a wind-drifted shadrap, btw, and did fight very well, even jumped once.

It's funny they go docile once out of the water, (not like a trout that will fling itself around constantly)...  but soon as I lowered him back in, it was gone with a flash and a splash.

Eric, you should get extra points for referencing a killer Ben Folds song...I don't listen to BF5 much, but I always liked that song.

Nice CP&R on that smallie.  Seventeen inches of hard fighting and high jumping fish there.
