Actually I have spoken with someone regarding the sale of abalone pearls. This man is a distributor of all kinds of natural pearls. He was cited by the DFG for selling of abalone pearls and when he went to court he prevailed convincing the judge though scientific means that the pearl in the abalone in not part of the abalone. The pearl is caused by a foreign body entering the host which makes the pearl. So you can sell pearls but not the abalone itself or parts of. Pretty cool, huh?

Wow, that is really fantastic. I always check, but still have not found any? Whatt part of the guts do you typically find them in, the bigger green sack or the smaller brown one?  Thanks Mike

That pearl was found in the brown sac that leads to the larger stomach.

Out of curiosity what size abs do you find the majority of your pearls in. I have been looking for a while and have not found one yet.

An abalone that has reached legal size of 7inches is approximatley8years old I have read(between pacific tides is the name of the book)I would tend to think that most pearls are found in sandier areas. But the pearl I showed at the beginning of the thread came fromPedottis reef area. Its been so long I really dont remember just where. I should have written it down. There are other kids of pearls called bister pearls and these are the bumps you see in the abalone shell on the inside. Sometimes these are cut around and mounted flat like on a pendant. I wouldn't call those real pearls.

I have mounted a couple of the pearls (bumps on the shell) They look cool but not as nice as a real pearl.

Here are a couple pearls from last weekend....one is nice and the other is just like a piece of sand from a playground.  My only advice is that when I find pearls there is usually more that one, so keep looking once you find one.
