Bloodbath here! Made it out to  North Side Monastery Beach with Cabezo. The water was perfect with an incoming tide, and about 20-30 ft of visibility. We didn't see too many fish out there but..........................
I hear Cabezo through his snorkel say OH SHIT! So I turn around and he is heading down about 20ft and slings a lingcod. All I can see is Cabezo trying his best to pin the ling against the rocks and the ling is going crazy. I head down to back him up and try to get my trident tip in the ling. As I am half way down, the ling escapes, it was definitely stunned by the shot to the head from Cabezo. The ling exits left, so I make it down to 20 ft and the ling is going in a circle pattern right in front of me. Bam! Stick him and bring him to the top. At this point Cabezo has gotten a breath of air and helps to hold this bad boy on the sling and we put him on the stringer.
Final measurements come out to a 32" ling caught with hawaiian sling. This day goes down in history and the teamwork that was accomplished was awesome. One fish is all we needed. The End.

Nice work fellas.  The buddy system pays off.  Another great reason to dive with a buddy, besides having someone to save your bacon.  Something fun to try sometime is watch a buddy spearfish.  Have your speargun or sling ready.  When your buddy shoots a rockfish sometimes a hidden ling will come out to investigate......bam.  I've done this with my little brother a few times.

Nice fish guys, but just for a heads up you entered from an MLPA and part of the north side of Monastary is part of this at least to 36 31.700'N (past the first wash rocks on the north side).  I have no doubt you speared your fish north of this line, but I usually prefer to avoid to much interpretation. :smt002

Nice ling Joe!

Just an FYI: I have received written (and electronic) confirmation from various DFG wardens that it is legal to enter and exit the water via the Reserve. [the documentation is posted on this site but I don’t feel like searching for it right now]
In other words, it is OK to launch+return from Monastery beach with fish in possession---as long as you shoot/catch the fish outside the Reserve boundaries. Of course, you can’t have a line in the water as you paddle through the reserve; nor can you dive inside the reserve with a spear in-hand (might be sticky situation for divers w/out yaks or boards, so I’d advise entering+exiting the water North of Monastery in that case).

For those that don't spear fish, (Like me) what's a "hawaiian sling"

It's a challenging, old-school way to hunt. Instead of an actual triggered speargun---it is essentially a spear with stretchy rubber tubing on one end (and a trident on the other). Think "slingshot." Using the stretchy rubber tubing, you propel the spear at the fish. I bet there are tons of videos online but this is the first one I found:

Here is a link w/some good info and a video: http://underwaterflorida.homestead.com/hawaiiansling.html

Like I said there is definitely room for interpretation. One other note: That MLPA is important to all the scuba divers, and It would only take one phone call about guys walking to the water with slings or guns to turn it into a big ticket.

By the way, not trying to salt on you guys, just trying to educate.  There is also a PDF on CDFG site that has all the coordinates and maps of the MLPA's enacted last September.  You can even stop by the Marine Region office in Ragsdale Dr. and pick up a printed one as well.

Bloodbath here! Hey Ab10. Good looking out. I am very familiar with the gps coordinates and the restrictions. I have even spoken to a game warden at the spot to clarify if it is ok to swim out of the beach. Every game warden has a slightly different answer to this question.

Nice...my brother and I use to tag-team barred pargo in Baja all the time. And it's come in handy for a few nice cabs up here.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...
